I have two ball bearings on the switch, and they appear to go on the springs for detents at different switch positions. Believe the ‘fingers’ on the 90 degree arm actually make the connections at different switch positions.

I got into my Malibu transformer because I could no longer set the clock time or the on/off times. The only thing I found was that the 3.6v battery read 3.0v on my meter. Would that voltage drop be enough to screw up the clock functions? I guess I'm going to have to take it apart again and replace the battery to see. I like your idea of using a battery holder mounted outside the case.

Can you drill the solder out to remove the old battery instead of using a soldering iron to melt the solder?
