Julin: HEY
Emmet: WHAT’S-UP? wh-q
Julin: 2 YEARS NOW YOU-ME FRIENDS? y/n-q (We’ve been friends 2 years now, right?)
Emmet: YES! MY SIGN BETTER. WRONG? wh-q (We have! And my signing has gotten better. Is something wrong?)
Julin: AGREED. DAY BETTER++. I WORRY. MY DAUGHTER DEAF. (It gets better everyday. I’m worried about my daughter who’s deaf.)
Emmet: THANK YOU. WORRY WHY? wh-q DEAF GOOD HERE. DEAF EQUAL. (Thank you. Why are you worried, it’s good to be deaf here. The deaf are treated the same.)
Julin: ADA KNOWS SIGN LANGUAGE, FARM LIFE, LOTS OF THINGS. BUT NEEDS MORE SCHOOL I KNOW. (Ada knows lots of things like sign language and farming, but she needs more schooling than I can give her.)
Emmet: REMEMBER 2 SPRING PAST, BOAT I HELP FIX? y/n-q IX-AMERICA. IX-FRANCE. ONE MAN TRAVEL IX-FRANCE. 2 MEN SAIL BACK TO IX-AMERICA. (Remember the boat I fixed 2 springs ago? A man went to France and brought back another man.)
Julin: France! WOW! LONG TRIP. WHO? COME AMERICA WHY? wh-q (France is a long trip. Who is it? Why did they come to America?)
Emmet: IX-AMERICA GALLAUDET SAIL IX-FRANCE. IX-FRANCE LAURENT WITH GALLAUDET TRAVEL IX-AMERICA. IX-A-L-I-C-E NEIGHBOR GALLAUDET. A-L-I-C-E DEAF. GALLAUDET WANT MAKE DEAF SCHOOL, SIGN TEACH. (Thomas Gallaudet went to France and brought back Laurent Clerc. Gallaudet’s neighbor, Alice is deaf. He wanted to create a school for the deaf to teach sign.)
Julin: PEOPLE HERE TALK GALLAUDET, LAURENT. TRUE, DEAF SCHOOL START? WHERE? wh-q (I’ve heard people around here talking about them. Is it true? Did they start a deaf school? If so, where?)
Emmet: TRUE! CONNECTICUT.
Julin: 1ST TIME ADA LEAVE ISLAND. (How exciting! It would be the first time Ada’s is off the island.)
Emmet: NEW ERA. DEAF COMMUNITIES CONNECTING. (It’s a new era. Deaf communities are
connecting with each other.)
Julin: EXCITING TIME LIVE. (It’s an exciting time to live in.)
