As a greek I can confirm that these are the basics in what we learn in history

I was invited to my friend's house for dinner. His family is from Italy. The rules were as follows:
1. Everyone is family,
2. You don't say no to more
3. You participate in the festivities

The fermentation process was far less refined than it is today. The yeasts were different and there usually wasn't any additional sugars added in the wine making. So, even the strongest wines were like 7%-8% alcohol by volume. Further dilution made the beverages like a very mild beer.
Even so the idea that all parties followed a strict etiquette should be dismissed entirely even for the upper class. The idea was to drink and get tipsy (drunk actually).

I just love the fact that people have always drank together. It has always been a thing. Even the parties have basically been the same from ancient times to modern age.
