Few artists fail because of their craft, most artists fail because of the business side of things. So important for creators to talk on this topic! Keep up the good work!

I never been to filmmaking school or classes before, I graduated majoring in accounting and just last year I realized my passion for videography and start posting on YouTube. The only way to learn is by making more videos, I really enjoy it

A great video! It is very rare to watch someone talking about money so honestly.
And I think that everything you ve said is true (or seems to be right) :D

Did you go to film school or are you self taught?

These are my notes for the video.

Traditional route :
1. Go to film school
2. Get into a production crew and work there.
If you’re a hard worker then you’re probably gonna get called for another project.
But you need to have a portfolio to get into one.

Try to approach as many agencies.

[You get paid by day rates usually]

Unconventional routes :

1. Wedding filmmaking
2. Corporate films (they don’t need to be that flashy but they pay quite well)
3. Passive Income - sell stock footage, YouTube, affiliate marketing, etc.

• never think a project is beneath you.
• don’t under charge and finally
• don’t work for free even if little start charging right away.

So many good tips Matti! To think that this is only touching the tip of the iceberg that is your (incredibly helpful) full course on making a living as a filmmaker.

Hi Matti,
M a music producer but have learnt this process after a long study/observation abiut the industry.
But yea,
You've really come up with something that nobody nowadays shares these kinda information.
Really happy to see something which will surely help freshers.
Keep it up brother. 👍

I feel I like the music industry is the same way. I'm a working musician and I don't understand how people become starving artists. You don't have to be that person to do music full time. I started making money by busking in the street, then I got gigs in restaurants and hotels, now I play at weddings and corporate events. In my free time I write my own songs and pay a producer to record them. I know people who only do songwriting and write for TV and film and in their spare time they write their own music. I completely agree that passive income is another great way to make money as a freelancer. Write blogs about your field, books and tutorials! I think this is great advice for just about any creative field. You just have to get out of that mentality that you are going to be a star. It means you feel entitled.

I came across your video cause I'm actually getting into cinematography right now. I'm doing it just for fun but I thought if I get good at it, maybe I can also make some money :)

Damn Matti, it’s crazy to see how far your skills on camera have come since this! Great info here, but man, you’re a new person on camera these days! It’s actually inspiring to see this, being new-ish to the youtube game.

As a filmmaker who has spent the last 8-9 years only with music-related clients and no-budget indies, and only in the last 2 years started working with brands and agencies, I can attest that you are 100% correct. It is so much better to let the romantic notion of the "struggling artist" slip away, and embrace yourself as a business. My art has improved dramatically now that I am not constantly worried about making rent!

Peter McKinnon sent me here and I have to say in the first two minutes of watching your video I was so impressed with your Channel. I am a filmmaker who dreams of making films and videos full time one day. This video really connected with me and I appreciate you for making it. Looking forward to seeing more of your awesome videos.

This is actually so helpful - I feel like if you're coming to the filmmaking world from the outside, the money making aspect can be pretty opaque, so thank you for shedding some light!!!

I loved this one. The only problem is, people will like the work that I do but then don't want to pay the price that I set (which is usually far too reasonable lol)
