Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian was one of the most popular anime of the Summer 2024 season. And yet, debate has raged over the quality of the series, and notably that of its titular character. In fact, a different character altogether seemingly stole the show from Alya. Let's see if we can figure out why that happened, and if Yuki Suou really is the true star of this show.

the arc where she challenged her brother was by far the most interesting part of the season

Alya actually has a pretty solid foundation as a character. She's such a workaholic that she both alienates the people around him and consistently self destructs because of that.

But the problem is that Alya isn't really allowed to grow on her own without help from Masachika. At least in season one. She has a ton of really nice growth in the source material, but the anime isn't really doing it justice.

Also Masachika explicitly revealed why he doesn't make a move on Alya. His parents went through a divorce when he was a kid so he outright says he doesn't believe love either exists or that if it does, it's superficial and wont last long. Basically hes a cynical bastard in deep denial of what he actually wants.

Yuki is the best character in the show and she does carry it. My issue as I have been reading the books is that this is just another harem anime because he ends up with several girls after him. I agree with you as well, no guy would have been able to hold out for so long knowing that Alya likes him. I think the author is just dragging it out to sell more books.

i agree with everything except that alya has nothing else about her than just speaking her feelings in russian. this is a bad adaptation that was really just made to highlight the fun and exciting parts about the manga. the manga and light novel of this series are way better at giving alya a character and definitely makes it feel like shes actually from russia

Just adding a little caveat to the show being easy to watch. Coming from my friend to understand Russian and speak fluently, it's really hard to watch her speak it. The lines go from cringy to out right wrong, and for the Russian speaking to be one of the bigger parts of her character in the anime, it's a painful watch
