It should be up off the floor by 3 feet. Dirt and hair on the floor is heavy enough to have settled there; you won't inhale it. Air purifiers are intended for cleaning the air you breathe, and therefore they are built to trap PM10 and PM2.5 particles of dust with their HEPA filters. You should be vacuuming with a HEPA rated bagged vacuum cleaner, and the air purifier should be turning over the air in the room to remove those ultra fine dust grains which are so light that they never settle on the floor.

From what I understand a unit should never get this dirty- working or not. You're supposed to clean them in between filter changes.

There’s a lot more to consider besides “there’s dust on the filter”. If the air exchange rate can’t keep up with the dust being produced in the environment, the purifier is essentially ineffective

At this point that HEPA filter is so full it can't capture anymore particles. It's just releasing them back into the home. This is disgusting! I mean what does their HVAC filter look like? Gross. I'm sure you could hear that purifier struggling just to suck in any air.

That's a big unit, make and model? Today I noticed the ionisation part of my Amcor air filter isn't working. Purchased it in 1997 & it's been running ever since! The neon power indicator bulb works and is still bright.
It's 3 stage mesh inlet, aluminium electrostatic and ionisation. The aluminium filter gets really dirty, capturing fine dust. Needs to be washed every 3-4 weeks. I added HEPA and a small ozone generator to the exhaust.
Any suggestion for a unit? Medium sized room, approximately 250 2 ft.

It's true, and I don't even need an air purifier: I just remove the front panel on my computer and look at the mesh filter.

yeah in australia classrooms used to require air purifiers for covid and one time they came over to change the filter and it was nastyy

that is just dust... or fine particles the things that make you sick are ultrafineparticles echtpaar gasses and that kinda stuf catalytic converters and afterbunrners

Try vacuuming once in a while. I could let my purifiers run for a year, and they wouldn't look like that. 🤢
