Heel Spur Treatment – How to Avoid Heel Spur Surgery | Seattle Podiatrist

Heel spurs are nothing more than an enlargement of the bone at the site where the plantar fascia ligament attaches to the heel bone. If your plantar fascia is tight then over many years that tightness can lead to extra bone formation that we call a “heel spur”. This foot spur, however, does not cause pain by itself. What causes pain and inflammation is the tugging of the plantar fascia on the heel bone.

Treatment of heel spurs and heel pain is focused on reducing the “tugging” of the plantar fascia on the heel bone. If we can eliminate that tugging with the use of proper shoes, orthotics, stretching, strengthening and other treatments then we can usually eliminate heel pain without having to resort to heel surgery.

Watch this video so that you don’t live with heel pain and you have the best chance at avoiding heel surgery.

Dr. Larry Huppin specializes in heel pain and other mechanical problems affecting the feet and ankles. He completed an exclusive fellowship in orthotics and biomechanics and has since become a leading national authority on the subject. He has practiced podiatric medicine in Seattle for over 20 years and has a special interest in helping patients achieve complete relief of any foot problem without resorting to surgery.

Thank you very much. I went for a very long walk yesterday and I have been having problem with my right heal. I picked up a new balance shoe and it killed me! I pulled the insole out and it was flat! I put in another insole that supports my feet and pain almost gone right away. Going to where for a bit around the house to get the pressure off my feet. I love walking. Thank you again.

I went to for a second opinion after the first dr said i need spur removal and achilles repair,
The 2nd dr said i could come in for physical therapy 2x-3x per week.
The results in correcting the pain he said were around 90%.
So i started thinking, what if i go 3x per week for 3 months i will have to pay $40 per visit to physical therapy copay thats $120 per week, then in addition i have a job so i have to be able to schedule 3x a week around my job in order to pay for insurance and copays. Also considering what if physical therapy is not successful, then ive used up all my physical therapy coverage and would still need surgery and would have no physical therapy coverage at all.
I WAS NOT WILLING TO GAMBLE so i opted with the 1st dr and went ahead with the surgery...1 and done!!!
Im so glad i did because after the spur removal my surgeon explained to me that i didnt just have a spur, but that mine went across the back of the heel like a ledge unable to be seen in the xray.( the 2nd dr did an xray as well and did not see that either)
just physical therapy would have been a temporary fix for alot of money.

I was recently diagnosed with heel bursitis and spurs in the back of my heels. I've had it for about 8 months now and went to the podiatrist twice. I was given basic pain medication and heel lifts for my shoes (none of which helped) and was recommended physical therapy( which is expensive). It's my understanding that bursitis is temporary and should have gone away on it's own by now. The pain is almost unbearable. Are the spurs causing my bursitis which thereby causes my pain? I want to avoid surgery but alternative techniques don't seem to work.

I know someone who had heel spur that person had surgery and now they are back to the activities this is my opinion physical therapy exercises don't work unless you get the heel spur surgery that way after you get the heel spur surgery and you can exercise a whole lot better

I've had surgery on both feet for heel spurs.on my right foot it's been done twice. The spurs were so bad I could not walk.its been about 9 months since my last surgery and am experiencing again severe pain in my heel again. No stretching, therapy injections nothing is helping the pain at this point.and I also have some nerve issues from my last surgery on my ankle in addition to the returning heel pain.

That's not going to make the heel spur go away.

Hello
I got an ex ray that shows my spur broke a small bit off. I’ve been wearing a night sock for months without any help. Being told since it broke off only help is cutting it out. Is that true? In an avid runner & this pain is screwing up my life.
Have a Great Day.

I always thought a heel spur was some sort of spiky growth on your heel bone that would eventually "break through" the skin from the inside like an open fracture.

This video addresses a heel spur under the foot (plantar facia area). My issue is a very large retrocalcaneal heel spur (back of the heel involving the achilles tendon) - so saying that heel spurs don't cause pain, for me, feels incorrect. What can be done for a RETRO-calcaneal heel spur? I'm so afraid to have the big surgery to fix it, which involves 9 months of recovery (or more). Thank you.

If that bone is on the ligament nothing will take the pain away unless you get surgery. Im glad this guy is not my Dr
