Learn the derivative product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule for your Calculus 1 class. This tutorial is for calculus beginners to learn the differentiation techniques easily. We will also do 4 examples, differentiate x^3*sin(x), sin(x)/(1+cos(x)), (sec(x))^3, and sec(x^3).

It's sad how much I will forget after the 6 week holiday so this video is great for remembering.

My mnemonic for the quotient rule is "don't use the quotient rule, you'll make a sign error"

In the quotient rule you have to reorder the places of your f and g functions (dont put g f, is better f g), if you do that you will can multiply in cross and at the end you have just to put the results down (incuded the negative sign for the second expresion), without cross again.

My memory device for quotient rule:

Low-d(high) High-d(low) square the bottom and away you go

If anyone is still here, an easy rhyme for Quotient rule that helped me remember it went as follows:
“Low d high minus high d low, square the bottom and away we go!”
Someone was just being silly in class one day and spit that out, but none of us forgot how the quotient rule worked again!
So the low d high part just looks like the gf’ he did, same with high d low being fg’.

What are these rules? I can't really remember them. I only know Prada Lu, Kochen Lu and Chen Lu!

when you make a second arrow in product rule, you have a plus :)

Here is my advice, when you forget these rules go back to the limits (limit of difference quotient as difference of arguments goes to zero)

And to mix your last two examples, the chain rule can itself be chained, right? If the equation were something like
d/dx (sec^3(x^2))
It would end up being
3sec^2(x^2) * sec(x^2) tan(x^2) * 2x
= 6x sec^3(x^2) tan(x^2)
right?

Im confused 😕, how do i know when to use the power rule and when the chain rule? Why isn't the d/dx(sec^3(x))=3sec^2(x) ?
