On the surface, Hunter (Haley Bennett) appears to have it all. However, as the pressure to meet her controlling in-laws and husband’s rigid expectations mounts, cracks begin to appear in her carefully created facade. Hunter develops a dangerous habit, and a dark secret from her past seeps out in the form of a disorder called pica - a condition that has her compulsively swallowing inedible, and oftentimes life-threatening, objects. A provocative and squirm-inducing psychological thriller, SWALLOW follows one woman’s unraveling as she struggles to reclaim independence in the face of an oppressive system by whatever means possible.

Watched with high expectations and holy shit, it set the bar even higher from what I was expecting, specially Haley Bennett. This film made me realise how ridiculously underrated and underused she's as an actress, she's extraordinary on this film.

I can't believe how real the reaction, the lines, the development of character's psychology are. I had an issue with control too (not about eating weird stuff) and I was in denial that it was a big deal. It happened during the time when I was lonely and not have much work to occupy myself too. I felt out of control, and crave to be in control, so I started adopting obsessive behavior that even I myself cannot fathom, but I don't want anyone to find out. When I finally plugged up the courage to reach out for help, I thought everyone was just being overdramatic but am now in therapy to fix my disorder. Watching this is pretty uneasy because I feel like being called out. Please, anyone with any type of mental illness, reaching out and vocalize your fear, obsession, disorder to your trusted one will be the milestone that can change your miserable life. So speak up, you are stronger than whatever the "urge" in your head is telling you to do.

I actually really liked this movie. I came for an A24 horror and left with an extremely weird and amazing woman empowerment movie. Nothing good happened to anyone, but in the end I had this good feeling

The movie is much better than the trailer. Its a very odd and interesting drama with first class acting and some powerful moments with a plot that goes deeper than pica.

Because of the mislabelling by IMDB claiming that this movie was a horror, I was expecting her to descend into insanity and start eating people in true horror fashion but nothing of the sort happens because as Rotten Tomatoes has correctly labelled this movie, its a Drama and Mystery Suspense movie.

I don't want to give too much away but the ending is probably going shock some people and divide opinion but thinking back, the movie was always going to lead to this conclusion.

Incredible film, just watched it. It isn't Fincher-like, that's misleading. It's not really a thriller, it's more of a psychological case study. Trying to understand how a person becomes the way that she is, how a person could enjoy a particular way of hurting herself. And how that ripples outward through the circles of people that are in her world. Start to finish, large moments to small details, totally brilliant.
