Decking tape over the top of the joists and at the intersections with the beams makes a big difference on the life of the framing. Especially over doubled up lumber as the water can’t sit in between the framing members and rot it out

You should do a series visiting past houses that you've built to see what's holding up and what's failing before you expected it to

I would love a episode after this mini series just looking back on what you learned in the last 15 years of building.

The top rot of the joists was likely caused by having an outdoor rug on the deck. The rugs hold water longer and also prevent the wood below from drying.

Give Jaime a raise so he can buy a new hat, poor guy . Glad to see you at it again. Much love from the Netherlands ❤

Arlo is never gone, he is always here.
Let that be a comfort to us all.

It goes to show you that the homeowners loved your previous work and called you back. Thats when you know you have satisfied customers 👍👍👍

Deck joist tape is really good these days. You’ll double the life of the frame. A wise man once said that wood only rots if it can’t dry out. So your section when you say a post was rotten where the rail met it was because moisture get in the can’t dry out. Often only on that small part. This is why the joist tape rocks.

Nailing through the face of the decking allows water to follow.Use a deck clip and put waterproofing tape on joists.IMHO

Arlo reminds me of being a carpenter, doing cash and carry on my own house, when I was out of work on pokey ( unemployment benefits ) with cash in hand I would carry on with projects of my farm, ending up selling the farm for $1, 500, 000 in 2009. I worked union on a commercial new build, and the contractor required us to wear glasses he provided, never had to go to the first aid for debris in our eyes, which at $30 / hr would equal to a pair of glasses, I still have them after 20 years .
Nice to have a big crew, only its a hustle to keep every one working, or you will lose them, what are your tricks . I hired my son (16) at the time and a buddy of his during the summer busy season . Did this until he went into carpentry apprenticeship, becoming a red seal carpenter . But he went college to become an engineer, doing residential plan engineering, which is required in our earthquake prone part of the world . He is an asset to the company because of his construction experience, he can talk to carpenters and builders on same the level as them. Thanks for the videos, as a 76 year old carpenter, it’s great see you all . Peter from Victoria B C

As a carpenter from Australia I find it fascinating watching trades from other countries, who knows I might find some cool tricks and tips, keep up the good work gents 👍

I know renovation is harder than new builds. But, at least with this one, you know exactly what was done originally. That must make it easier to plan and salvage, as with the joist hangers and aluminum flashing. As always, great video and great work. 👍

Great video! I recommend using a spud bar to remove deck boards. After replacing deck boards on dozens of decks I have found a spud bar to be a very helpful tool. I also suggest using zip tape on top of the joists (under the deck boards to prevent the deck joists from rotting out.

Deck flashing is definitely a life preserver of the wood, especially where the deck crosses the Joyce

I work in the film industry, visual effects, it’s an awesome career, I love my job, but when I watch these videos I want to ditch it all in and join a crew like this. The work is great, the attention to detail (picking up bits at the end of a day to keep tidy) and the humor between you all makes for a life well spent.

seal the tops of the joists to prevent rot. Use flashing tape or even henry's roofing

Never leave the decking dry, slather out some lindseed oil on it once a year, or every 10 years if its barn planks. Mom made us do it every summer in the august heat.

Welcome back Arlo. Jamie needs a new hat! Great build team, hopefully the homeowners will take a bit of care with this deck, the other looked in need of painting around the trim and staining on the boards. Great they asked you back.

Jaime's hat is hilarious. My dog ate mine like that a few weeks ago. Gotta love her.
