Eric Carmen: 'Hungry Eyes' & 'All By Myself' singer, Dies at 74, Raspberries Frontman & Wife

Eric Carmen one of Cleveland's most influential and successful music artists died this past weekend at the age of 74, his wife Amy confirmed on Facebook.

Carmen, who was born in Cleveland and raised in Lyndhurst, experienced his first bit of local fame when he joined power-pop band Cyrus Erie in the late 1960s.
He was well known by songs of ‘Hungry Eyes' and ‘All By Myself.’

I was at Charlotte High School in Rochester, NY in the 1970's when the Raspberries came out. I still remember buying their first self-titled "Vinyl" album with the "Scratch and Sniff" sticker on the front. Yes, if you scratched it, it smelled like Raspberries! They had a lot of great songs but my two favorites were, "I Can Remember, " and "If You Change Your Mind." I had lost a high school sweet heart back then, and it seemed every one of Eric's words resonated with the feelings I was going through. After Eric left the band for his solo career in the late 1970's, I believe it was the Summer of 1975, I saw the remaining band with Wally Bryson on lead guitar, doing a show at the Hilton High School gymnasium in Hilton, NY. From what I remember, the school won a contest to host them for a concert. The Raspberries were Great with Eric and Eric had many hits alone and it was great they re-united in the later years to do great shows together again. I had a big crush on him, back in the early 70's..He had the best hair and the longest lashes!! He also had the best voice. I love watching the old videos of Go All The Way, .he was so cute! Hungry Eyes is one of my favorite songs..he sang it so well with that beautiful voice of his! Wiill love you 4ever Eric!

I remember as a 12 year old kid in 1972 glued to the radio waiting to hear "Go All The Way" by The Raspberries, loved that song and still do and even have it on an oldies playlist on my phone.

I must have watched Dirty Dancing a hundred times. Hungry Eyes is a great song. All of Eric’s music was beautiful. That era of music will always be the best.

What a tremendous singer and pianist. I loved his song ALL BY MYSELF. I bought it when it first came out and played it nonstop for hours. That’s how much it touched me. I’ll never forget it. REST IN PEACE, ERIC.

I loved Eric’s ballads growing up in the 70’s. Great piano playing and loved the Raspberries harmonies. So happy that Celine Dion did a cover on All By Myself to expose other generations to Eric’s ballads. Needless to say I loved his voice, eyes and hair.
