I am amazed I am the first person to comment.
Gabor Mate, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
You are always the most helpful, compassionate teacher.
I really needed to hear this.
It would have been good if I had accepted other people's situations over the past 25 years and not been driven by grief, fear and a desperate kind of hope.
I love you Gabor, for being the most truly human and nurturing teacher I can think of.
Your soft voice is indicative of the love, wisdom and understanding you possess.
I also admire you greatly for the honesty you have with and about your own children.
I think that not being there emotionally for one's children to the extent they require, is the most common thing for parents and children.
But in the cultures we live in, this is not emphasized at all.
It is not emphasized, the role of extended family. It is a lot to expect one or two parents to be everything to all their children.
I watch the Maori and Polynesian families around me. The Maori children have so much more status. Being mischievous is not seen as a bad quality to be crushed. Children have a kind of a divine position of highly spiritual qualities. Children certainly do have these highly in tune, precious qualities.
Maori people have a concept of whanau, pronounced faarknow.
All members of the whanau are a center and nurtured in a fully comprehensive manner. These interactions take care of the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of everyone. It is the more British culture that has the non acceptance, judgements and punitive mentality here in New Zealand.
I could write volumes on these 2 contrasting ways of operating.
I love your humanity, Gabor.
