He. Gave. His. Hat. When. Nobody. Else. Would. #CriEvrytiem

This scene is even more sad when you realize the context. Shirley said that the mirror will help Eustace "see himself the way he really is." So Eustace, the mean old farmer, is actually a sad little boy deep down inside. Very powerful stuff for a cartoon.

"Aww, no I'm... now that's not right, little boy without---every little boy should have a hat."

Powerful words.

How he says: "Well that's not right, a little boy should have a hat." that just warms your heart right there.

Sometimes I think Eustace isn't bad at all, it's just old and angry.

It hurts my hearts to know that the Voice actor for Muriel sadly passed away. This show will forever hold a place in my heart.

I'm sure this happened to Eustace as a boy and someone was nice to him and gave him that hat, which is why he cares for it so much...

To see Eustace genuinely smile like that somehow makes my day. Something about this mold-covered old man is super wholesome.

It's definitely the smile. A smile devoid of greed or pettiness. He did something kind and realized that it felt good. A glimpse into the man he could have been if life had been kinder to *him* and taught him that lesson sooner.

This show made me cry so much as a kid. Especially the star squids and tree episode.

I take that he is reflecting at his lonely self.

This was such a sad scene when I was a kid, and I don't know why.

It's amazing how much heart the show has when you're older and fully understand it.

I'm pretty sure the reason Eustace was always mean is because he has a rough life. His mom calls him stupid boy, which would explain Eustace's saying "Stupid Dog" all the time. He did have a brother that was a jerk to him, and my guess is that his dad was never around. I think another reason why Eustace is a jerk to Courage is because he thinks Muriel is giving him the love that he never gotten when he was a kid. These types of moments should happen more often.

Edit: Thanks for the likes. I do think Eustace is one of those characters that is misunderstood, and deserved better for how he was treated.

Edit 2: I'll admit Eustace is a pretty mean dude, but there are some moments where he was pretty chill. He's just one of those characters that I wish we had more character development.

Courage the Cowardly Dog introduced children to mental trauma and anguish far before we realized how much it affected us into adulthood. Honestly it's one of the hardest shows to rewatch because damn near every hardship they showed adults going through is what anyone who grew up with the show is dealing with now. A masterpiece of writing if there ever was one on Cartoon Network.

This is only ONE of Eustace's kindest moments, in the Mother's Day special, despite being bullied by his mother, he comforted her after finding out she's bald.
