🩺 Ask Doctor Hansen:

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. What causes high blood pressure? High blood pressure usually develops over time. It can happen because of unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as not getting enough regular physical activity. Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and having obesity, can also increase the risk for developing high blood pressure.

Doctor's don't talk anymore, they just prescribe medications. Thank You for taking the time to explain BP.😁

Thanks Doc. This is what needs to be on the news and informing people. These lifestyle changes will actually impact people on an individual level and effect meaningful changes. It’s unfortunate that most will go about their lives with no idea that they are causing harm to themselves. It’s no rocket science when you look at why certain demographics suffer from hypertension more than others

This is excellent information. Both of my parents are on Blood pressure medication. Their doctor told them that they need to take blood pressure medicine because as they age they are vulnerable to strokes. Let’s just is the worst thing they agreed to do. The side effects are so bad, it’s creating so many health problems for them. They don’t eat process foods, they cook and eat real food. They agreed to the medication out of fear.

First here, for a video I caught within 18 seconds of its posting! But more importantly, just what I need, since just yesterday I started testing with high blood pressure. Yikes. Thank you, doctor. I need to take this seriously.

Got it. Eat less processed food, less salt and less sugar. Thanks.

Had no idea there was an insulin connection to high sodium issues and therefore blood pressure. This makes so much sense! Thanks for sharing!!

I'm 73 and have been 100% vegetarian for 50 years. A1C is 5.6. My blood pressure had been getting to the 130s and 140s and spiking to the 150s and low 160s at the doctor's office. I started taking 1/4 teaspoon of beetroot powder every morning. It lowered the BP at first but it was too erratic. After about 6 weeks it stabilized. We have also gotten a potassium salt. Now we use both it and salt. I also take 99 mg of potassium with magnesium every night. I think it was a good adjunct to the beetroot powder. Now the BP is always in the 120s over the 70s. The diastolic has always been good.

Such a great teacher, and I understand what he’s talking about and I could have been a doctor if he was teaching me! 😮😊❤

Great video . You should also talk about the role daily exercise plays in helping the body use up the added sugars and reduce the chance of getting many diseases. I’m pretty sure that eating a bunch of sugars then sitting on the couch for 6 hours VS immediately going to the gym to train for 1.5 hours is a totally different story.

Thanks for shedding light on this. One of the issues faced by patients when faced especially with resistant hypertension is that GP's often circle in and out a variety of medications in the hope that their BP can be brought under control. Often there can be underlying reasons for elevated BP e.g as in my case Primary Aldosteronism. It's my belief that many strugging to control their BP may well be somewhere along the road to full blown PA. As you will know, PA is commonly badly diagnosed and still we wait for an adequate drug to STOP rather than BLOCK excess Aldosterone secretion. DASH eating plan will offer substantial benefit by balancing and or improving your K / Na ratio - a plan suitable for most with BP issues.

Disease usually starts or is made worst with poor nutrition.

Pure gold!
Thank you doctor Mike!
I have a couple questions regarding BP:
Why does added sugar or sodium effect your BP? What type of sugar and sodium is OK, and how much daily?

What effects insulin resistance?

Which nutrition advice or lifestyle/diet is most conducive to longevity of your body's systems and organs?

I am willing to change my lifestyle/diet for optimum health, thank you!

I have had hypertension my whole adult life though I have been at a healthy weight and eat reasonably healthy diet. My mother had hypertension, so it seemed it was hereditary. I am now 71 years old but back when I was in my mid-20s I would jog about 20 miles a week at a 7 minute per mile pace. Not exactly world class but not terrible. Then with no other options to lower my BP, I went on to blood pressure medication. My jogging speed fell to 9 minutes per mile literally overnight. Still, I figured it was better to be a slightly less athletic guy with one less health risk rather than a more athletic guy with a significant health risk.

Thanks Doc! When I started recording daily BP it was super high so I did my homework so that I won't use meds. I started taking 195 mg time released potassium, eating more foods that have potassium since I need a minimum of 2600 mg and drank a tablespoon of beet crystals. Within 2 days, my BP went down.😀😀
