Burning my eyeballs again

Today I'm going to try burning magnesium under CO2. Magnesium is actually strong enough to directly react with the CO2 and rip the oxygen off it. It can even do this with things like water and sand, and I think that's kind of terrifying.

In the volcano of 73 here in Iceland people used to carry lit matches when going into basements to detect volcanic fumes, and if the matches went out then you had to get out of the basement or your life would go out in the basement.
It probably wasnt CO2 but it wasn't oxygen which was everything people cared about.
