If you already didn't know Nestor, here is the difference between stone and golden pick:
Golden pickaxe: Less durability, more efficiency, can be smelted into a golden nugget, and since it has curse of vanishing, it disappears when you die.
Stone pickaxe: More durability, less efficiency, cannot be smelted.

I've heard if you just rename your item (ie. Diamond sword into Diamond sword 1) should lower you're level costs.
