In this video, I react for the first time to Lea Salonga performing 'On My Own' from the musical 'Les Miserables'. In this video, I analyse her amazing performance, explain and demonstrate her vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.

This is a masterful performance that took place at the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary concert, buy a real life Disney princess.

I read that this perfomance is the definitive version, people still watch to learn from. She is just amazing and she know it :) ❤

This is my favourite Les Mis song, and this is my favourite performance of the song. This is the performance I have always measured other performances by, and needless to say I have never found one that I prefer. If i had just one criticism of Lea Salonga's performance, it is that I could never understand how Marius could be so stupid as to not fall in love with Eponine. I mean seriously, I cannot see the pain in those eyes at the end without shedding a tear and wanting to give her a big hug.

This is the gold standard of that song. And when you've heard Lea performing it you won't ever be able to not think of it whenever you hear somebody sing it. Lea is THE Eponine!

NO ONE can ever, ever beat this performance. Immaculately perfect!

Lea is the queen of mix. Do A little fall of rain with her and Michael Ball. Chills 🙏🏻

If someone ever produced an illustrated dictionary of music, this performance would be inserted as the illustration in the margin next to the definition of "musical theater." It is simply everything that musical theater could possibly be. It is, as the Fairy Voice Mother describes it, continuous perfection. And, Lolli gives this a fresh polish with her brilliant analysis. I am not a student of voice, but I was greatly enlightened without being inundated with minutia of vocal mechanics. Lea Salonga stands alone, but Lolli's review gives full justice to this utterly perfect performance. Well done!

Still the standard for Eponine to me. I grew up on Lea as Jasmine and Mulan. Loving her voice lead me to this concert, this concert made me fall in love with Le Mis, which then made me fall in love with musical theatre. So the point is: Lea Salonga is a goddess and we appreciate her.

This is from the 10th Anniversary Concert. She played Eponine. You should listen to her sing A Little Fall of Rain with Michael Ball. Phenomenal.

Lea is an amazing singer but Lolli, you are an equally amazing analyst! Your ability to breakdown the mechanics of her vocal production is truly jaw dropping. I am in awe of your talent. Love your butterflies too. Thank you for being the best analyst on YT. I don't understand why you don't have 2M subs already.

I love how you explain things in laymen's terms for those of us who do not have a vast knowledge of music theory or pedagogy! :)

Lea has been performing in her home country of the Philippines since she was 7 years old. (She was born in 1971.) Lea did theater, albums, concerts, film and TV as a child and teenager before she was discovered for MISS SAIGON at age 17. Lea originated the lead role in MISS SAIGON at age 18 in the West End, age 20 on Broadway, and won every major theater award in both countries for her portrayals. You already mentioned that Lea is the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan.

Lea was the first Asian/non-Caucasian to play Eponine on Broadway (in 1993) and then was part of this 10th anniversary concert in 1995. Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival in 2007 as Fantine and then played Fantine at the 25th anniversary concert in 2010. Lea is one of only 2 actors to play roles in both the 10th and 25th anniversary LES MIZ concerts (the other was Jenny Galloway), but the only one to play two different roles.

I love that people with no vocal training can just watch this performance and love it, but people with vocal training have an even greater appreciation of Lea's talent. Thank you for appreciating Lea's acting in addition to her amazing singing.

I really hope you'll check out more of Lea's performances. So many wonderful ones! Just a couple off the top of my head: Lea Salonga rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting", Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at MISS SAIGON 25th anniversary concert, Lea and Regine Velasquez sing a musical medley, Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from LES MIZ 10th anniversary concert.

P.S. Her name is pronounced LAY-ah.

The last phrase was heartachingly long (15:02) and she still had breath left for the N. A few times I thought a breath was coming and she continued the phrase instead..loved how she interpreted the song.

I've gotta say, young lady....DAMN!! I can FEEL your passion through the screen!!! You have a gift. Your explanations are succinct and--most importantly --easy to understand, complete with a demonstration.
I bet you're GREAT in a teaching capacity..😊😊😊

I saw her performing this on stage and it ripped my heart out and squished it.

Someday I may not tear up at this performance. Today was not that day. Thank you for your wonderful reaction and analysis.

Thank you for selecting this performance. Lea is the gold standard for all that play Éponine. She is the queen of musical theatre diction and I appreciate the restraint she uses in the final big notes. (Too many others belt the crap out of them.) Honestly, you could review the entire 10th anniversary show as a special live stream event. It's just that good. But I would suggest Colm Wilkinson — my favorite Valjean — singing "Bring Him Home" during the same concert.

Ladies and gentlemen, the perfect female voice. If I could marry a voice, it would be Lea's. Then I would just sit around with my head in my hands staring while she sang around the house. I'd never get anything done.

You're absolutely right about getting the "permission to relax" once you've heard someone singing on pitch for a bit. I also experience this when listening to instrumental music. I've often had the unpleasant experience of not receiving said permission and being on edge for an entire performance.

This is (imo) the ultimate Les Mis performance and cast. The whole 10th Anniversary concert is absolute magic. Not only do you have Lea (all sorts of magic), Judy Kuhn (singing voice of Pocahontas), Michael Ball (legend) and Colm Wilkinson (gold standard of Valjean imo)
If you want another marvelous performance check "Empty chairs at empty tables" (anthem of survivors guilt) or "Bring him home" (just <3 )
Lovely reaction, thank you :)
