It's almost like when more people understand what it is, and there's much less of a stigma around it, more people might be able to identify with it.

More ressarch in autism and more awareness is leading to more diagnoses. And people with autism dont even make 1% of the population lol

People keep forgetting just how young autism as a concept is

"how come there were no autistic children when i was a child?"

Because you're almost 50 mom, autism as a term literally didn't exist when you were a child, it only split away from schizophrenia in the 1980's and wouldn't get it's modern definition until 2013

Identifying differences and calling them autistic for being different is exactly what OP was worried about.
Some people need help defending against sensory overload. That's the whole story. Nobody needs to care or identify or change their behaviour. It is only the people that speak out which creates an issue. Most people are trying to do right by their communities and you have no power outside of immediate situations in which you can react calmly and fairly.

I'm pretty sure that in 10 years, something will come out about the epidemic of autism/ adhd.
Considering an adult woman was told she'll need to wait like 20+ years for diagnosis tells me everything. Epidemic

As a person who struggled all my life it was a massive moment to get a adhd and autism report done and to get a answer to my way of doing and thinking. But it's not an excuse!

What people dont realize is content is cultivated. If you're arguing on every post about autism, you're gonna get shown more autism related content. It's not that its everywhere it's that you're where it is

I’ve honestly never heard someone say “everybody’s autistic now.” Didn’t know it was an issue tbh. I do think people are over medicated, or at least too easily medicated, for mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, adhd and such, but that’s a dif topic

I couldnt agree more, when i was growing up we celebrated that everyone is different and that makes you special and unique. There was nothing wrong with you, but nowadays if you dont exactly act like the person beside you then you have a mental disease or autistic. Its annoying and putting that there is spectrum makes it worse. We got a guy at work who was diagnosed autistic, and his only symptom is he gets nervous in work environment. He'll happily tell you how that was enough to get him diagnosed by the doc he went an seen.

“It’s statistically impossible that the number of people who claim to be autistic are all autistic”
“Oh yeah? Then explain this one example of someone who has a hobby but may not even be autistic”

Hey I know that guy!!! I'm pretty sure he's older than that, has a picture on his wall of a train he drew at five, wrote a book on old train lines, rents out a caboose apartment - lives in "Shelton"

There is no normal. Everybody has their quirks. We just have to give it a name now.

My 95 year old grandfather is autistic, he was born four years before the first person who was diagnosed with Autism, but it didn’t exist in his day 🙄

That’s not being autistic that’s just having a hobby
