Phillip Scott reports that many Black TikTok users just found out that Samoans have an anti-Black slur that's used to describe Black people. We need to just focus on our community and realize as Dr. John Henrik Clarke told us, " We have no friends".

So many of us lack racial esteem. My blackness is not a curse. It's a blessing from God!!

I like and love who I see in the mirror daily.

As Black people, we need to be asking ourselves who we are to each other and not care about how the world feels about us.

Like my father used to always tell me you can't make people like you but make them respect you.

As a Samoan, I'd like to clarify a misconception regarding the Samoan word "Meauli." In our language, "Mea" means "thing" and "Uli" translates to "Black" or "Dark"; hence "Meauli" essentially means "Black thing." Throughout my life, I've heard this term used in various contexts, even by our Samoan people with darker skin, but never as a racial insult.

While "Meauli" might not be the most appropriate term to describe people with dark skin, it's crucial to understand that it wasn't intended as a derogatory word. A more fitting term in our language would be "Tagata Uli", meaning "dark person." The Samoan language holds a strong foundation of respect, and while we have our own array of colourful expressions, our primary intention is always respect.

This discussion reminds us to reflect on our word choices. Still, it's important to emphasise that in the Samoan context, "Meauli" was never used as a racial slight against Black or African individuals, especially considering the diverse skin tones in the Pacific region.

As Marcus Garvey said,
“The Black skin is not a badge of shame, but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness.”
Some of us must stop looking for validation from others. Unity is strength.

I’m CONVINCED that EVERY OTHER group/culture on this planet has their own word for us at this point!

Why does this still shock people the world has been conditioned and rewarded to be this way towards us

The reality is, we're not even good to one another within our own diaspora. I do honestly believe that if we practice more solidarity and self-respect within our culture, others won't be so quick to disrespect us.

If we stop caring what our races think and build ourselves up, it would not matter. We need to be a unit.

The fact that all of these groups despise us actually makes me feel elite/arrogant as a Black person. I know that may seem weird but that’s how my mind works lol. We are really the only group that is liable to not be cowardly, docile and obsequious when it comes to dealing with “ them folks” 🤷🏽‍♀️

My sister is half Samoan and back in the day her family would call her that whenever she did something they didn't agree with

It's weird that the world is like this towards black people. We haven't done anything to these other groups.

Being a full blooded Samoan with dark skin, I grew up hearing the word 'meauli' all my life. This word has existed in the Samoan vocabulary since the beginning and long before both the black and white man ever set foot on the islands.

It was never a racial slur. It was a word used to describe darker coloured Samoans like myself. I must admit it's neither a pretty nor an appropriate term, nevertheless, it's an existing word in our language. I'm sure every language has a few colourful words in their language. Samoan is no exception.

Hope this helps.

This is why I don’t like the POC rhetoric. Because no one rocks with us.

I never thought Samoans were down with us, so no surprise here. No one is down with us, and as a collective, we need to have higher self-esteem.
