More episodes of this series:

More and more people put online courses and certificates (HarvardX, Coursera, Stanford, edX) on their CV and on their LinkedIn profile. In this video I'm gonna discuss whether it makes sense to do that and give you some insights from a friend of mine working in recruiting. You should better watch the video before spending countless hours to finish an online certificate/ course at HarvardX, Coursera, Stanford, edX, udemy, ..etc.

Cheers

At the very least, we gotta approach these courses with the intent to learn. Not to merely acquire something to put on a resume. There's no doubt in my mind that the knowledge could still carry over to interviews and technical talk

I got a high paying job using a certifiate from a MOOC and not my bahelors. Recruiters and employers love people who go out of their way to learn new skills. Most of them choose soft skills like curiosity, willingeness to learn, self-discipline, and self-motivation over technical skills.

Dude, this certificates work. I've worked in good jobs becouse of them. You just talk from the emotional part not from the logic part. Come on, wtf this video

These courses will give you that extra kick when you are looking for a job where you are against someone who has never done online courses vs you who has done some online courses. You know who the recruiter will give preference to.

Coursera is awesome!! I got two Certificates from two Ivy League Colleges. I am now working on a third. A Law course. I have a degree, but I believe many employers will see a person at least doing something to better themselves intellectually during these times. I actually enjoy and have learned a lot from these courses!!!

No facts just personal opinions that is not backed up by anything. This video is garbage. I enrolled to one of the edX course and it was a video taken from the actual lesson from Harvard university and uploaded online so how can you turn around and say the standard is low?

Some of the edX courses can be really good. I am an Australian lawyer myself and I am currently doing the course on International Law from UC Louvain in Belgium. The quality of the Louvain course is far better than the international law course I took when I was in law school. The professor is awesome and does a great job of explaining in depth the key concepts and ideas behind international law. I feel that I now have a solid understanding of how international law works and operates.

The surprising thing is that I only paid $100+ for the edX course, whereas the international law course I took at law school cost me $3, 800!

We should all put on our resumes next to the online course certificate ( I took it during Quarantine) I bet your recruiter will remember that historic time and for sure he/she will understand and empathize.

Honestly I feel like CS, Programming, Machine and Deep Learning courses/ majors are worth the deal when taken online for the following reasons:
1. Not every region has enough computational resources
2. Not every school can provide resources professors etc for the emerging majors
3. Silicon Valley invents and the world consumes

Online courses are more accepted now than CS degrees, because online courses give more room for real world practical learning and experience, CS degrees generally don't; also being outdated by 10 years in some ways.

I respect your friends opinions as you mentioned she is a recruiter, but out of all companies and recruiters out in the field it’s not based solely on her opinion.

I learned more in a 6 week course than in two years of college, and I also was better prepared to go into my field of study. Certificates are just a better option than college for gaining depth of field, and will make you eligible for more jobs/ more effective in them.

tbh I learned more technical knowledge by taking up udemy courses compared to my 5 years in college; what I like in udemy is that they taught me a lot of practical knowledge that isn't taught in universities. So if you want more theories and whatnots schools are better since you have your professors but if what you are after is practical skills and knowledge that real people and professionals are using then in their fields these courses are worth it. Imo try using the free trials and previews of the courses first then decide afterwards.

I have taken some of the courses you mention and I can assure you they help. They serve to understand aspects of contemporary medicine, especially at a time like this where sharing opinions among doctors from all over the world is the best way to advance in the treatment of emerging pathologies (like covid). During these courses or these conferences you come into contact with other colleagues and you can have very interesting debates especially regarding the news. Honestly, I can't tell you how much they affect a job interview (because where I live there are selection tests and there arent usually interviews for physicians) but they certainly help when a patient reads the curriculum to know they are in the right hands. They show that you keep up to date, that you deepen certain topics and that you have a better preparation than just the degree.

So you literally made a video on "why they are useless" to say "I don't know".

Come on Kev, that's not the man I subscribed to.

Corporations DO recognize the importance of online courses. Especially in IT industry, thats why there are so many certifications, diplomas, degrees accepted. Not only educational institutions but also MNCs like google, IBM, etc are focusing on building relevant certifications in order to train the individuals to the industry level before they enter their job. Its strategic as well as these corporations can save a lot which otherwise they would spend on training.

Excuse me, but I completely disagree with your video. I don't know which recruiter you spoke to, its not under consideration, its already being considered in organizations and not only being a cherry on the cake but being a big part of the cake.

Thats why people like Elon Musk doesn't give a damn about college degrees and it has changed the perspective a lot. A LOT.

I feel this made sense before Cvoid. Now, it is obvious it is not only respected but needed. The world is ever-changing at faster rates.
But it is mentioned it was still early at the time.

Private homeschooling for kids in small groups is now a thing. More parents actually want to teach their own kids.

Right now a lot of universities around the world hold courses on-line. There is little to no differentiation as long as you can show off the skills you got to an employer.

This dude is out of his mind. A lot of online certificates require classes and exams. I did 3 with CISCO and very much valued. I reckon that there are many other topics that earn you certificates online that are well regarded.

I think like many people said, COVID changed these things. Nowdays these courses of course are more valuable than before, because everything today is online mostly.
