Yea I saw this while playing the game during summer break in my high schools days. I was like I've been playing this too much and starting to see things. Took a break and tried to recreate it and never could. I concluded I was just sleep deprived hahaha

Or it will bug out and never let you finish, like it did to me one time. That's why I am extra careful to kill all the shamans well before it gets down to 5.

the first time I saw this was a long time ago, I was about 14 and I shit myself when I realized the number had changed to 666, I told everyone I knew at the time that played diablo with me and it became like a legend hahahaha

Do you know if this was patched in? I swear I had this scenario happen to me when I was a kid (pre LOD) and the counter just read 5 even though there was six.

Could be wrong of course. Memory isn't reliable. But maybe it was patched in at some point? Or maybe it exists in the 1.0 version too.
