Giving Mario's Mushroom Kingdom a Proper History (Nintendo, I fixed your lore!)

Here I begin to lay out lore for Super Mario — not under the false pretense that Nintendo has a secret continuity to these games, but blatantly forging it myself. This is the first of a series of videos where I will recreate Mario's story to be consistent, entertaining, familiar, and better than anything Nintendo will ever give us.

Special thanks @moldomre, @Zeldom, and many others who helped by criticizing numerous drafts of the video!

This is awesome! Wish that Nintendo put so much effort into the Lore of Mario as you have put into this video. Keep up the good work!

Before the age of the monarch, there existed the Toadstool Tribal Nations or TTNs. These tribal nations would often fight to gain territory and satisfy the clan leader.
One specific tribe, Amuria was founded in 1936 by a young toadsworth and his family. This kingdom stood out and many clan leaders signed a treaty to join Amuria. This kingdom grew over time until 1953 when it was the largest clan on the continent. The Northern Kingdom hated this and wanted to be the larger kingdom. So they declared war. The war was very easy for Amuria due to the former kings knowing how to invade. This led to a huge wave of Northern soldiers swoopinh down, killing the king and queen. By this time, Toadsworth was an old ass man at 41 years, so he knew how to fight. He captured the Northern king and tortured him until he was left with no choice but to surrender.
1956 : the Mushroom Kingdom is founded by a group of toads that decided to change the kingdom name.

1:31 this is the only part that I find weird, because it’s mentioned somewhere that goombas were once allies with the toads before betraying them and joining bowsers army, so shouldn’t the two species be peaceful with each other at first? Other then that cool video.

If you ever come back to this, I’m interested on where the beanbean kingdom fits into all this since it’s stated in the games that they’re a neighboring kingdom.

Hello Wolffe,

I have to say I disagree with the very premise of your video, but I’m going to break down why piece by piece. To open, no, you have not “fixed” Nintendo’s lore, and with the changes you’ve made to the established canon in this video you’ve actually thrown much of the lore that’s already there out the window I’m afraid.

[0:19]

Mario isn’t all that different from The Legend of Zelda in terms of storytelling and lore, the main difference being that Mario is more consistent with its primary lore and setting than The Legend of Zelda is, as unlike the Legend of Zelda franchise, the Mario franchise is set within a much shorter timespan.

Not every series that has done worldbuilding has ended, partly because every Mario series does worldbuilding and partly because the series that you referenced (Mario & Luigi) hasn’t ended. AlphaDream may have gone bankrupt but so did Hudson and Artoon, yet both the Mario Party and Yoshi’s Island series came back with new developers within the decade. Even if AlphaDream hadn’t gone Bankrupt, we wouldn’t have a new Mario & Luigi by now on average. I’d say give it some time.

[0:46]

In-canon the same Mario appears in all of the games represented here. While Paper Mario is technically a Paper copy of the “real” Mario, he explicitly has all of the same memories and life experiences - he is essentially the same person.

[1:12]

Not a fan of the Toads being evolved from humans. While Toads and humans likely share a common ancestor, they’re far too different biologically to have only been separated from the rest of the world “for decades”. Beyond that, Toads have explicitly existed for thousands of years as established in games such as Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door, Paper Mario: the Origami King, etc. and have many ancient structures from their reign that still remain (Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Kart 7, Paper Mario: the Origami King).

[1:30]

This part seems like a major flub to me. Within the established canon, the Goombas and Toads lived in peace until Bowser’s time. That’s why there are still friendly Goombas living within the Mushroom Kingdom (Paper Mario), why Goombas can enter Peach’s Castle without being persecuted (Super Princess Peach) and has been a piece of worldbuilding since their introduction in Super Mario Bros.

Changing it so that the Goombas were always “monsters” instead of old allies that turned to the enemy side seems a bit unintuitive if you ask me.

[1:39]

The Koopa Kingdom is long established to share an island with the Mushroom Kingdom. That’s their island of origin. This is why the Mushroom Kingdom is Bowser’s favourite spot to invade during his frequent attempts to expand his empire, and why the Koopa populous is so large (and has always been so large) within the Mushroom Kingdom.

[2:16]

Those castles, at least the ones you depicted in the illustration, are explicitly built by Bowser. They’re bases for his troops that are established during invasions. This has been mentioned in multiple places, including Super Mario Run.

[3:55]

Skipping all of the headcanon lore that doesn’t really contradict anything, the Sand Kingdom is definitely unrelated to Sarasaland within the canon. The mesoamerican culture of the Sand Kingdom is largely at odds with Sarasaland’s four major cultures, but they’re also likely at opposite ends of the planet. At most some Easton Residents migrated to the Sand Kingdom many moons ago, becoming the modern day Moe-Eyes (but in that case we know that they also landed in the Mushroom Kingdom thanks to the Stone-Eyes).

[4:44]

This largely ignores the established ancient civilisations within the series that served as precursors to the modern Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Kingdom (Dry Dry Kingdom, Kingdom of Bask, Kingdom of Shrooms, etc.) which seems to be a waste personally.

[5:18]

The Kings of Super Mario Bros. 3 are the Kings of the Kingdoms surrounding the Mushroom Kingdom. I would say it’s a stretch to compare them for governors serving under the Toadstool Family.

[5:20]

Sarasaland Architecture, at least what we see of it, is quite different from Mushroom Kingdom architecture. While you could say this is just for the sake of your revamp of the lore, that would be quite a drastic change to many iconic locations.

[5:54]

This, I think, is one of the most egregious changes. Princess Peach’s family is nowhere near that young. They’ve been ruling the Mushroom Kingdom for hundreds, if not thousands of years. They used to reside within the Palace (Super Mario Strikers) but moved into Mushroom Castle near Shooting Star Summit, forging connections with the Star Spirits and receiving gifts such as the Magical Treasure Chest. Rosalina’s family eventually came to rule, and a young Rosalina ran away after her mother’s passing leading to her brother’s succession. That line, after hundreds of years, then lead to Princess Peach.

[6:54]

Humans really aren’t all that rare, they just don’t commonly live within central Mushroom Kingdom. Diamond City, a settlement that’s implied to be relatively near to the Mushroom Kingdom, is full of humans. There are also many humans dispersed throughout the land such as Professor E. Gadd, Booster or Plum.

Anyway, I hope you didn’t find this response to harsh. If you’d like me to elaborate upon anything just let me know.

The rpg games being back is awesome. I hope they try to eventually do some world building even if it’s surface level

Bowser being basically a pirate king makes an odd amount of sense.

Mario does have a consistent story in spite of what many people believe.

While would think Toads are humans in symbiosis, the Toads are repeatively called Mushrooms like Goombas are in universe and in other places.

Not sure if the Goombas would have been at war with the Toads given how they are implied to have originally lived together.
Though there is the bizarreness of Wild Goombas.

I believe you are having the Koopas originating off continent because of a possible thing on the wiki and Odyssey.
Though I'm not 100% sure if that's why. Regardless I am goin to address that in case that is your reasoning.
The Mario wiki states the following about the Mushroom Kingdom, "the Mushroom Kingdom is portrayed as a large country with many landscapes such as grassy plains, deserts, beaches, snowy tundras, jungles, mountains, cloudy areas, and volcanoes." Alongside listing World 8 as part of the Mushroom Kingdom so people believe this is not the Koopa Kingdom but a place Bowser just took control over. The problem is the Koopa Kingdom is established to be it's own separate Kingdom, and just because a Kingdom is on the same continent doesn't mean it's part of the Mushroom Kingdom. The Flower Kingdom and Bean Bean Kingdom are also part of the Mushroom Continent, yet still their own kingdoms.
As for Bowser's Kingdom, the Brochure lists of Stairface Ogres as the residents of this kingdom, not Koopas. The only species of Koopas we see in Bowser's Kingdom isn't even the common one, it's Spinys. You'd think if this is the Koopa Homeland it would have well Koopas. Interestingly enough the industry of this Kingdom is Hanafuda Cards, and the Stairface Ogre's mallets appear like the presses that would be used to make such cards. So yeah I don't think Bowser's Kingdom is actual the Koopa Kingdom, let alone the homeland of the Koopas.

Given your visuals I believe you are implying the Fortresses are built by the Toads, they aren't.
Super Mario Run mentions the are Bowser's fortresses. In Odyssey we actually see him use magic to create balls he hurls at Mario made of Fortress parts. In Island Tour he uses magic to create a tower.

I don't think that would support your Sarassaland hypothesis though interesting.
In addition you have humans living in the Mushroom Kingdom such as the Bros.

Do you think that all of this is happening on a "second earth" parallel to our own?

Like our planet is split into two timelines connected by warp pipes. Mario is from Brooklin in our world. Its possible the humans in that world are decendants of early immigrants from ours.

That's what I believe anyway.
