Learn Electronics Repair #1 - Welcome to the channel

On this channel I want to teach you how to repair a variety of Electronic items to component level. Mainly I repair Desktop Motherboards, GPU Graphics Cards, Laptops and Audio Equipment. I often undertake repairs without having a circuit diagram and most of my repair work is on items I buy to repair and then sell at a profit.

This is a 'hobby' that you can do in your spare time, it can be very enjoyable and also make you some good money on occasion!

Whether you are a beginner interested in Electronics Repair, or already have some experience and maybe would like to learn something new to expand your knowledge, I hope you would like to follow this channel.

I will be making videos that will teach you from the very beginning, there will be videos about circuits and components, about tools and equipment and other aspects of Electronics Repair. At the same time I will be making regular unedited 'live' repair videos where I try to fix a whole variety of things.

So you will find everything you need to know here to understand electronic components and circuits, while at the same time we will jump into the 'deep end' with some actual real life repairs

Really the only way do learn this is by doing it, so this course will be very much aimed towards the practical aspects of repair, rather than to electronics theory and mathematics.

So let's start the journey together and Learn Electronics Repair!

Richard, my genesis is very similar to your story. As soon as I was let loose with a screwdriver, I showed interest in everything electrical and electronic. A neighbor who ran a stereo repair business in the 1970s would give me his scrap to explore. I paid my way through University as an electronics service tech, and had a 30+ year as an electronics engineer. I was always far more proficient with hands on troubleshooting of new designs than my coworkers because of my experience of debugging real world failures. (Universities don't teach about the effects of poor solder joints, leaky flux on capacitors, and crappy connectors!)

Now mostly retired, I am returning to electronics repair. As of late, I have been repairing classic hifi equipment procured through the regional processing centers for Goodwill, a national charity thrift store chain in the US.

I have found the demand for restored 1970s and 1980s HiFi equipment is high in the US as long as I am able to verify proper operation and performance. This has required some investment in vintage test equipment to measure amplifier distortion and cassette head alignment, speed, and wow & flutter. I am surprised that eBay buyers are willing to pay the shipping charges for this heavy classic equipment!

I keep picking up industrial electronics business through community connections. I now repair digital boards for industrial saw controllers, inverters for off-grid solar installations, and display assemblies for several different industrial machines (Displays are mostly finding an equivalent LCD on Alibaba or eBay and knowing how to properly program the new display EDID EEPROM.)

Hello Richard. The algorithm recommended your channel to me. I love what you are doing! I have started my journey on electronics repair, fixing phones and game consoles and I really want to learn component level repair. I'm so thankful for people like you that are willing to share their knowledge so that others might continue to save devices from being trashed. I went through your channel and decided to start on your first video. I can tell already that I will enjoy your videos because I like the way you tell your history as if we are sitting around just talking.

I've been watching video game arcade machine restoration videos on TikTok, and it's really got me interested. I have absolutely no experience with electronics, but I'm excited to learn. Thank you for making this channel.

Amateur radio ham interesting in learning more about electronics for my hobby. Everything is a steep learning curve (i.e. vertical) but doing something and getting it right is very satisfying. Fortunately there are people in my local club who are always there to offer helpful advice and I learn by drawing on their experience. Am trying to repair a 13v power supply and your videos along with helpful advice from others helps me break the task down into small manageable steps to tackle.

Hi Richard. I wanted to tell you how much I'm enjoying your videos. I'm a retired engineer of similar age to you and started tinkering with electronics at around age 10, which sounds like about when you started. Not many 4th graders ask for a soldering iron for Christmas. You do an outstanding job of explaining the theory of operation of the various components and circuits without getting lost in the math. Your casual style of teaching makes an hour video seem to fly by. Thanks again.

Thanks for your series Richard. Getting your snippets of real world practical experience are absolute Gold-dust! I started doing this in the 70’s and still have the spring-connector original Electronics hobby kit today! I also remember my Mum buying me my first breadboard connector and then her being horrified by the cost of something so small - invaluable for playing around with though! So, many thanks and I look forward to your videos and insights! 👏🏼 BTW Canaries - jealous! 😁

Hello Richard,
I searched for "electronics repair" and found your amazing channel. I like electronics but I'm not an engineer. I'm just an IT professional software developer since 1992, looking how to upgrade my basic electronics skills... ☺ I love to study, understanding how things work and learn every day, eventually hacking them for a new creative use.
So I think that your channel will be very interesting and engaging for me.
I liked your story and admire how you are able to repair things without schematics. I'm 51 now, but I think it is never too late to learn something new. Right? 🤭
That's the "gasoline" for my brain..hahaha😄
I saw you posted tons of videos in just one year, wow, that's amazing. So thanks a lot for sharing them and to help other people in your life. God bless you.
I think I will learn a better English as well, because your original UK accent is a bit difficult to understand for me.... Luckily, there are subtitles...hehehe 😅
I wish you the best! 😉 Regards.

I noticed your channel and subscribed recently. Even though you did videos on subjects like resisters I still learned new things.

When I did electronics in high school I easily picked up schematics. For me they helped.me do electrons.

Back in high school I learned a lot about vacuum tubes electronic (1962 - 1964). A few years later my brother took the shop and learned about transistors. Later I went into chemistry in university.

As a new subscriber myself (my name is Richard as well), I think all subscribers should watch this. Of course, if they are reading these comments, they would have...

It gets to the reasons we are all here and offers hope to those of us looking to expand upon our existing skills.

Hello Richard :)
Geoffrey here from the Balearics. Been dabbling in computer repairs for years without knowing a sausage about electronics. Mainly changing pc components, not fixing them. Really looking forward to learn from your videos. Thank in advance!

Revisit from 2022. I'm so glad you joined youtube Rich, there maybe others on the platform doing what your doing but mate you are the best. Your a great public communicator and teacher and have the skill, knowledge and experience to back it up. Some have skill, some have knowledge and some have experience but lack in other areas, presentation, talking with confidence, poor quality recording, expressing the knowledge the know etc. You don't have any of these issues and are just a 100% great person, teacher, communicator and creator. Thank you. Hello from Scotland, Its good to see you living it up in the sun pal. ATB.
