Being a career mechanical engineer, I've went through a variety of electronic scientific calculators throughout the years. The first calculator that I got when I was in high school, back in the late '70s, was a 4-function Commador calculator w/ red LED display that cost $65 USD. I've had TIs, Casios, and HPs. My favorites are the HP RPN calculators. I also have a collection of ancient slide rules. But I have to say, you have to admire a civilization that still today, teaches children how to use the still very useful manual calculation device of the ancient abacus. They even have abacus speed competitions. If I was ever in a situation requiring a life-or-death calculation to be performed and discovered my HP batteries were dead, I'd want a kid with an abacus.

i remember being in an abacus competition club when i was growing up in okinawa, that shit was so scary and nerve wracking but i won 5th place and they let me keep mine afterwards! i still have it to this day and use it for fun sometimes 🥰

Edit: Just clarifying, I don't doubt this would work, but how this video cuts it short to make it seem as though it takes no time at all to get them on with a few passes in the box is the hang up I think most of us are having.

Abacus classes are big business here. in japan. Kids that master an abacus can eventually calculate huge numbers in their head.

im a filipino, ever since ive been very interested to buy an abacus from traditional makers & learn how to use it, they say an experienced abacus user can compute faster than an experienced calculator user, ergo my fascination.❤

Счёты развивают логическое мышление. На них можно складывать, вычитать, умножать и делить. А сейчас у многих этого мышления нет вообще. Я работала на счетах, мне очень нравилось.
