In this video, we're putting the beginner editor on Adobe Premiere against the pro on iMovie in a video editing showdown! Find out which software comes out on top and which one is best for you.

In this challenge, they both edit footage shot by Landon for a fan-made commercial for Ghost Longboard. With no creative upper hand, they each have two hours to transform this footage into a compelling story. Josh, a three-month Premiere Pro user, and Jake, revisiting iMovie after years, face off to showcase their editing skills.

The results are fascinating! Landon critiques both edits, discussing aspects like pacing, frame rate, color grading, and sound design. While Josh's slower-paced, technically sound edit impresses, Jake's iMovie creation brings an immersive, fast-paced vibe with impressive sound design, winning Landon's favor as the ideal choice for engaging social media content.

In conclusion, this challenge highlights the importance of skills over gear. Full-time Filmmaker emphasizes this ethos, offering a course to excel in filmmaking with any equipment.

I started editing in high school on FCP7. I use Premiere now but it’s been 10+ years and for the life of me I’m pretty sure I’d be dumb as hell on iMovie

Beginner vs Pro: lighting. Give the pro a tight budget, give the beginner all the gear.

The real winner should be the person who got to edit this video

The judge should not know whose edits he's watching.
It should be a blind review.

This video proves all you really need is your skills in the execution of the story.

I started editing on iMovie on iPhone back in 2017, and I can tell you that there is nothing to be ashamed of if you edit on iMovie. I transitioned onto Adobe Premiere pro, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt - if I didn't start out on iMovie, I would not have the skill set I have today. iMovie will always have a special place in my heart.

Damn, I can’t believe the difference between a pro who was handed some footage and told to make something and a pro who knew what he wanted, recorded it in his style and edited it all together himself. That last one was incredible.

Second day learning Premiere Pro after 5 years of using iMovie...the learning curve is steep and I find myself wanting to run back into the arms of my simpleminded but familiar ex like, "Forgive me for wanting more; all I really needed was right in front of me all along!!!!" But the die has been cast; my new laptop is a PC...so I persevere😜

Am I the only one thinking that they should've used Windows Movie Maker?

Jake's edit was obviously better, because of his experience in choosing shots. He thought it through much more, and you can tell.

That guy who edited on iMovie just nailed it. No nauseating transitions just beautiful and immersive flow.

Josh's work is coming along nicely, Jake's edit was great, Landon's edit was awesome! The pacing and speed ramps really make the difference

The most major issue i found with Joshs edit was that despite him having done a color grade, it didnt look like it had been done. Mainly because the main subjects of the film were almost always merging with the background so often times i didnt know what i was supposed to focus on. However Jake (despite having only the basic tools of imovie at his disposal) tackled this problem very well. In every frame my eye is immediately drawn to the characters instead of going anywhere else.

Do a blind comparison like just do all you like but reviewer would not know who made which one and at the end choose the best one, that would be a bit more dope you know.

I'm a film maker for almost 7 years and I've never tried to use some expensive equipment like cameras or gimbal. But here's the most important, I don't think about the equipment, I just take advantage for this and the result is pretty good. Some of my shortfilms won even without proper equipment.

You are right. 😊 "You don't need the nice equipment. You don't need the nicest software. What you do need is SKILLS."
