ADRENAL CRISIS. - Jill's First Crisis with Addison’s Disease.

After living with Addison's Disease for 10 years I experienced my first adrenal crisis. It was the scariest night of my life.
My first MAJOR adrenal crisis came on suddenly without warning. I was confused about what was happening. Violent vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and extreme weakness.

My little dog knew mommy was sick and helped alert help. Paramedics arrived who had DAYS before training on the adrenal crisis. I was given SOLU-CORTEF IV bedside because I was prepared for the situation.

In the middle of covid, I was strapped to a chair and carried out of my house in the middle of the night. I went to the hospital alone hoping I would come back.

Watching from my hospital bed after having my first crisis on Thursday which was building up for 8 weeks. I dragged myself to DRS appointment for constant nausea, sickness, exhaustion, weakness, craving salt. I couldn’t stand up when i arrived, bp 68/59, dr called the hospital to admitted me. Cortisol levels 37, sodium 100. Diagnosed today and i'm now in shock. I thought i was going to die.

I so relate with the being overstimulated & dealing with people. "Go away, but stay & love me" 🤣 it takes special people to give us our space to be us ❤

Oh Jill. This is so completely how my crises have gone! I’m amazed that they gave you fluids and your Solucortef without a ‘doctor’s’ orders!! So wonderful! I had a crisis 2 weeks ago… went to the ER and they played ‘let’s google Addison’s’ 😞 I don’t remember much, but I do remember sitting in triage breathing so shallowly and the triage nurse telling me to ‘stop breathing so heavily, I’d hyperventilate’. I looked up at my husband and said, ‘please don’t let me die’. The fear is SO real. I’m so glad you’re doing better now.. and bless sweet Harley for getting you the immediate attention you needed! 💗

Thank you for sharing your story. I was diagnosed in July 21 from having a crisis. Determined Addison Disease was caused from immunotherapy treatment for cancer. I was put on Hydrocortisone treatment and have had several crisis where I was rushed by rescue to local ER.

A "hi" here from The Netherlands.

I had tears in my eyes.. The relief you describe when the ambulance staff immediately performs the right actions. The feeling of "Now it's gonna be okay. I stay alive." I so recognize it from my very first Addison crisis that I had, after 32 years of cortisone use. It was really terrifying!! I totally agree with you.

Btw where did you get that awesome T-shirt? I LOVE it!
Take care warrior!

Im an ER nurse and I find it shocking that there’s stories about Addisons not being treated. Addisons is a part of our curriculum. Also, the BC ambulance service carried hydrocortisone for adrenal crisis as of this year :)

I have primary Addison 's due to immunotherapy for cancer. I just recently got my emergency Injection kit, it took me two years since diagnosis and 2.5 years since onset. Thank you for all the information!

Reading this and waiting for my doctor to come back on Monday to read my blood work. I have read it. From what i can decern from the blood work, i have hypopituitarism - a form of Addisons supposedly quite rare. Regardless treatment is cortisol replacement. MRI, Endocrinologist to determine if it is tumor related on the pituitary gland. I should be scared and am worried, but I had a dog, Papillon, with Primary Addisons. He lived to be 15 with medication ( Cortisol and Percorten). Good luck to all of us.

Thank you for sharing. I have experienced crisis multiple times. It is not a fun experience. I just went through it 2 days ago and I am on the mend. I have treated it at home and I do not recommend it. Getting to an IV rejuvenating site or er for an Iv is crucial. KEY take away from my experience. I always think I can push thought it. You cant, and you cant trust your judgement at that time, you need the iv once you start puking. I am trying to be less stubborn and go for fluid care right away. Thanks for spreading the word

I have secondary adrenal Insufficiency and hypothyroidism from my cancer immunotherapy drug. My endocrinologist doesn't seem to know how to treat both at same time. Just prescribed liothyronine for my T3 and pharmacist wouldn't give to me due to fear of dangerous effects it may have on my adrenal diagnosis and treatment with prednisone. I really appreciate your personal stories and guest interviews. More helpful than my doctors right now

Thank you for sharing your story. I don't take any chances with my Addison's and give myself an injection when I know I'm failing. Don't wait-use your emergency injection!! I did have a crisis when two injections in 1 hour didn't help. Spent 4 days in the hospital and it took me 4 weeks to feel better.
