In a topographic map the lines that run vertically is Eastings and the lines that run horizontally is Northings. Grid references are used to locate specific location of a place in a topographical map. They could be general [ 4 fig] or very specific[ 6 fig] in a grid square.
A grid square in a large scale of 1:50000 scale map measures 2cm x 2cm.
The international convention of giving a grid reference is by first identifying easting and then the northing. Eg, E E N N
