QF birds are not automated. Their is a pilot, they sit inside a C-130 modified for the task. QF birds are typically old, flight safe, and have most of everything removed because they are just flying targets. They pull aircraft out of the boneyard, and make them flight ready, they install a few things, certify them as safe for unlimited flight and fly them with a pilot to the ops area. After that, the war games fly a few sorties and eventually someone will be told to splash the bogey. First time I saw a QF bird it was a QF-86, no pilot as it rolled by, and freaked me out.
