Building the Silver Spitfire - Airfix 1/24 Spitfire IX - Part 1

The Silver Spitfire.
This is my project to build G-IRTY, the around the world record breaking Spitfire. I will be using the magnificent new Airfix 1/24 kit, and probably quite a lot of foil, to attempt a replica of the polished metal beauty that is the Silver Spitfire.

In part one, I introduce the kit and some of the extras I have picked up for the build.

Looking forward to a guide to foiling, a skill yet to try, so that'll be fun. I hope you get to see the glimmering Girty too.

You won't see five spoke wheels on a modern current day spitfire.
We had a saying at Charles Church Spitfires with regard to the main wheels. Four holes good, three holes better, five holes bad !
Five holes are not considered airworthy because of the material the wartime wheels were made of (magnesium) and prone to cracking and corrosion. Something to watch when modelling a modern restoration airframe.

Looking forward to this one. I have the 1/24 Spit in my stash as well, just waiting for some decent time to tackle it.

You’ve set yourself a challenge that most humans would shy away from!

It's amusing to see all the aftermarket for the Spit. Which isn't actually all that necessary to build up a very good looking model. I'm currently building the Trumpeter 1/32 F-105D....it literally NEEDED all aftermarket available.
And then some.😂🥴

Looks good . I'm getting back to modelling so I have some Eduard Spitfires and overtrees to get on with.I also have a Tiger Moth to build and need to research the one that Mithril had as I had aerobatics in that one in 1991.

Hi Jen, just got back from hols, I'm going to watch this one "feet up" later. But have you heard of, or tried Revell Chrom? I just got some for the car modes I do, and it's very very good. Might help you with smaller items like the spinner?

The decals are a nightmare to use and the anti glair does not fit.

I have four kits. Three will be posed in flight with variable speed electric motors with stainless steel drive shafts, supported by two sealed bearings to spin the prop true, without wobble. I designed/fabricated multi position stainless steel stands and modified seated figures.
One of the three is going to be G-IRTY using the Draw Decals received a month ago.
I have the AK Super Chrome ink and thinner to use for the polished finish. It is meant to be a improvement over Molotow chrome ink, the later used on a 1/32 Tamiya Mk. IXc. that turned out successful. Personally not a fan of metal foil on scales under 1/16. As a metal finish with a polished but not mirror look, similar to a factory fresh unpainted P-47, AK True Metal wax works well.
Completed the Airscale cockpit detail kit two days ago. The instrument panel is amazing. Well worth it.
Ordered the new Quinta Studios cockpit set. Parts from both upgrades will be in the fourth Spit posed landed with the canopy open.
The three kit engines not installed will be built on stands with added detail using resin parts from Anyz.
I was able to finish my Revell Germany SR-71. Nice to have this aircraft that was announced to the world, July, 24, 1964, known. By the quality of the kit one could assume Revell made the molds the same year but did not tell anyone until seven decades later . Despite that it can still be built into a impressive model after lots of work.

Hiya Jen great video as usual ~ when you showed the exhaust stubs and mentioned that they are very hollow, the ones on the right didn't look very hollow but the ones on the left certainly did.

Love your video. Can you please post a link to the website where we can find the brass landing gear you show at 8:10? Many thanks.
