I can't speak to all construction, like big commercial work. But for me doing residential, working for homeowners is very rewarding. They're much friendlier and accommodating than the average employer. There is a regular sense of accomplishment and appreciation for your work.

And like was said, the market right now for skilled, reliable labor is very much in the favor of the contractor.

I've known an engineer and a lawyer who quit their professions to become a contractor and are much happier for it.
