Every time you start scrolling on social media you’ll eventually see an influencer with a seemingly better life than you. With their 5am morning routines where they harvest wheat from their organic garden and cook cereal from scratch – it’s not surprising to see so many of them taking their private jet to go to the beach. But maybe not all is what it seems when faking your wealth is a real possibility behind a screen. There’s so much pressure with beauty standards, your personal image, and an obsession with luxury goods that’s causing influencers to go broke trying to look rich. East Asian looksmaxxing is when your financial success is directly tied to your appearance – you ever heard of someone taking out a loan to buy a luxury bag for clout? It's insane out here #edvasian

I've never understood the mentality of getting into debt just to portray a certain lifestyle you can't actually afford.

"Dress like a homeless then go home feast like Napoleon." My mom marked this mindset in my brain for a long time to prioritize needs over wants.

This is reminiscent of people on booktok talking about how expensive of a hobby reading is when 2nd hand bookstores and libraries exist

This girl is either in denial about wanting to be a professional pickleball player or she needs a financial advisor IMMEDIATELY

the idea of counting "lost income" as part of the cost of your new hobby is a new level of delusion and insanity to me like... the pickleball overlord isn't holding a gun to your head and forcing you to quit your job for a month I am begging you to interact with normal people

Going broke to look rich has been a thing since forever. The only difference is people used to try to impress their neighbours and extended family, rather than random people on social media.

Idk, flaunting your wealth on the internet seems like a great way to get robbed.

That lady made Pickleball her whole personality and is like "This is just a Hobby." Lady!? You moved to a different state for this sport, you are a Pickleballer Player.

I work on private aircraft in a small airport and we get "influencers" that ask if they can come and take pictures with or in our planes and jets. Saying they will tag us and the publicity will be great since they have however many followers. We laugh at them through the fence until they leave

As a Swiss and regularly next to such people, I can assure you that truly rich people are invisible because the first thing you learn when you become rich, and if you want to remain so discreetly, is to hide from possible sharks and indiscreet people. Peace, tranquility and security are the true wealth. BTW: "influencers" is the new name for "sellers". Remember, when they were active in the supermarket aisles. (I don't consider you as an influencer, but as a reporter)

What I find funny is that all those branded items don't make them look rich, but poor and tacky. Prada, Gucci and so on are brands that are made for middle class people who want to show off to others. But those who are actually really rich, like old money folks, usually don't wear something that has a brand name plastered all over it. They know they're rich, they don't need to show that off to anyone. These influencers would be better off investing their money in good quality custom made outfits that actually fit them well and will last for several years.

There used to be a commercial for a bank or a debt relief company or something like that where it's a suburban dad showing off his fancy car, big house and pool. Then he says "How do I do it? I'm in debt up to my eyeballs". It's unfortunate to see younger generations making the same mistakes just to keep up with the Joneses. Some things never change.

They did a study in SK, asking them what was most important: health, happiness, family, love, etc.... And the number one answer was money.

The mum having to buy her kid a Stanley cup reminds me why school uniform policies here in the UK maybe aren't such a bad thing. We regularly get Facebook posts and local news articles about parents mad because they bought their kid luxury branded shoes (one of the few items that aren't required to be from approved suppliers) and the school told them not to send the kid back until they have plain black shoes 😂

Unfortunately it probably can't help much with school lunchboxes etc.
