Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's decision about his two-day visit to Russia just hours before Moscow announced a military operation in Ukraine, shows the two countries are growing closer together after decades of strained relations. Pia Krishnankutty explains how Pakistan & Russia long mistrusted one another, given both sides maintained alliances with each other's sworn enemies, but changing geopolitics is forcing the two countries to reset bilateral ties.

Much ado about nothing. The Print's chief editor is Pakistan obsessed so sadly his deputies like this lady have to produce such analysis. Pakistan is a country that has nothing to offer to anybody leave alone Russia. Something the Taliban just discovered. Neither can Pakistan control the Taliban for Russia nor does it bring any economic opportunities for Russia in the form of weapons purchases or oil and gas purchases. One look at the pictures of the Imran-Putin meeting without even each country's flag in the background makes the atmospherics of the meeting pretty clear. It hardly looks like a Russian invitation to Imran and more like accomodating Chinese lobbying on behalf of Pakistan. As for India, make no mistake Russia needs India against China, a role that Pakistan doesn't fulfil. Russia is too great a nation to play second fiddle either to China or the West for too long. Pakistan doesn't help it on both counts.
