Η Σύμη είναι το όγδοο σε μέγεθος ελληνικό νησί του συμπλέγματος των Δωδεκανήσων. Βρίσκεται περί τα 12 μίλια ΒΔ. της Ρόδου, με συνολική έκταση 57,865 τ.χλμ.. Απέχει 255 μίλια από τον Πειραιά, περίπου 27 μίλια ανατολικά από τη Νίσυρο και 3,7 μίλια από την εγγύτερη ακτή της Τουρκίας.
Το φυσικό της λιμάνι είναι ο Γιαλός, πέριξ του οποίου είναι κτισμένη η πόλη αμφιθεατρικά. Έχει 2.606 κατοίκους, εκ των οποίων οι 2.427 είναι συγκεντρωμένοι στο άνω τμήμα της πόλης, το λεγόμενο Χωριό, που είναι κτισμένο επί της πλαγιάς του όρους Βίγλα. Υπάρχουν και τα θέρετρα Νημπορειός βορειότερα, και το Πέδι, ανατολικά. Περίπου το 5% των μονίμων κατοίκων είναι αλλοδαποί Ευρωπαίοι πολίτες, κυρίως Άγγλοι. Ο Γιαλός συνδέεται οδικά με το Χωριό, το Πέδι, τον Νημπορειό,την Μαραθούντα και την Ιερά Μονή Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ του Πανορμίτη που βρίσκεται στο νοτιότερο δυτικό άκρο της νήσου. Η Σύμη είναι τουριστικός προορισμός παγκοσμίου βεληνεκούς λόγω της αρχιτεκτονικής της.

Simi is the eighth largest Greek island in the Dodecanese. Located about 12 miles northwest of Rhodes, with a total area of 57 865 square km .. It is 255 miles from Piraeus, about 27 miles east of Nisiros and 3.7 miles from the nearest coast of Turkey.
The natural harbor is Gialos, around which is built the city amphitheater. It has 2,606 inhabitants, of whom 2,427 are concentrated in the upper part of town, called the Village, built on the slope of Mount Vigla. There are Nimborio resorts further north, and Pedi east. Approximately 5% of residents are foreigners Europeans, mainly British. Yialos is connected by road to the village, Pedi, the Nimborio, the Marathounta and the Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis located in the southern west tip of the island. Simi is world class tourist destination because of its architecture.
