You shouldn’t be allowed to gamble on credit

Happened to my neighbor. He was about to retired when he found out his wife had racked $50, 000 in credit card debt. He developed an aggressive cancer shortly thereafter, and died 3 months later. Now it's her problem.

That is a wildly terrible break in trust. Now at 75 that man not only has to deal with the debt, he has to deal with his wife's gambling addiction, and the lost trust.

I work in a dental office, and it's shocking how many people say "my wife/husband takes care of the bills" and are clueless as to their finances.

Now I don’t feel so bad for being kicked to the curb in 1990. Been single and happy ever since.

There should be a way to protect a spouse from spouses that do this sort of thing.

When my husband died at least 10 credit card companies that I never knew about bills came to me from his place of work. He'd had over $100, 000.00 debt. I paid them off and closed them all. So much for life insurance. I didn't know I didn't have to pay. Hecdied suddenly at 47 and I was 45 . I was in shock.

Gambling addiction is bad. My Grandfather did that to his family also.

Same thing happened to me, it was not my money he was gambling, but it definitely felt like a betrayal… after $30, 000 that he could’ve used to help us build wealth I finally pulled the plug… he couldn’t accept the fact that I was right and throwing money away it was crazy. But we’re divorced now and moving on. I just hope one day he gets help and he can live a life of peace.

Never ever turn over all the responsibility for your finances to anyone. I speak from a similar experience to this caller. It's bad enough to find out you have an untrustworthy spouse, the last thing you need is the debt to go with it.

Always check your credit cards regularly. Never trust casinos either, they are designed to take advantage of people even old people.

Oh that's so sad. My heart goes out to that poor man.

I manage the numbers in our house, but once a QTR I practically force my wife to sit down and go through them. Being in charge of money in a relationship is such an important thing, and lying about it, to me, is a deep breaking of trust.

I like the "trust, but verify" approach here. And if you manage the money, I like the "It's our money, come and see" approach.

If it's credit card only, separate her from all joint accounts and titles immediately. That debt is hers, not the family's.

A buddy at work is going through divorce right now. His wife finally told him she was 80k in credit card debt. In the divorce settlement of course she wanted the house, his retirement and of course she wanted him to pay the debt of 80k. These women will destroy your life!!

Divorcing someone, doesn’t mean you stop loving them. Just means you’re protecting yourself at this late stage. 💔
