Star Trek's Seven of Nine's Costumes Made No Sense - ScreenRant

In Star Trek: Picard, the Doctor suggests that Seven of Nine's form-fitting suit aids in her recovery post-Borg assimilation removal. However, the necessity of such attire is questioned. As Seven transitions to civilian life, practical clothing replaces the medically-mandated catsuits and high heels. This wardrobe shift symbolizes her newfound agency, shedding garments that were never essential from a medical standpoint.

After Jeri Ryan joined the Voyager cast in 1997, I distinctly remember an article in a magazine (yes, a magazine!), where the female writer/reviewer, after watching a few episodes with her significant other, asked him what he thought of her and he said, “She’s Borgolicious.” She apparently let him have that one.

Clearly sex appeal was a key factor in her arrival on the show, and the friction that that aspect caused on the set was well documented. But the storylines, the interactions of Seven with the crew (particularly Janeway), and Jeri’s acting ability soon all but overshadowed her outfit. And while it certainly doesn’t justify anything, it did turn out well along two fronts: the show’s depth and the lore of the Star Trek universe. Case in point, her enduring legacy as a character. Major credit goes to Jeri Ryan.

Now then, where’s Star Trek Legacy?

If your primary mission was to increase the TV ratings, then yes, her costume made perfect sense. Borg Perfection.

It was blatantly obvious what the producers of "Voyager" were going for given that Jeri Ryan's outfits were designed to bring the "sexy factor" into the show, and it worked. HOWEVER, Ryan's skills as an actress managed to rise above what could have been a major limitation.

Rather than just become a piece of eye candy, the character was smart and compelling with layers that made her intriguing to watch and know. In other words, in the hands of an equally attractive (but less capable actress) this could have backfired in a major way.

For sex appeal? And before anyone pulls the "male gaze" remember that lesbians and bi women exist

Slightly more awkwardly, apparently the reason we got 7/9 at all was because Jennifer Lien, who played Kes, had started to become, erm, a bit "unstable" as an actor.

That also contributed to the famous "feud" between Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan; Mulgrew felt that the original cast were a "family" (even though Lien clearly had some issues) and resented the way the producers cynically replaced one bit of "eye candy" with another.

Personally, I'm just glad they made it work.
Voyager is my favorite ST series, Janeway is my favorite ST Captain and 7/9 is a superb character, especially in the Picard series'.

You said it yourself, it was all done for eye candy and the ratings did go up. It's something that the new series seriously lack.
As for a 7 of 9 I like the actress but she is not the most intelligent girl. That's why they didn't greenlight the new Star Trek series with her as Captain. She was a great part of my childhood and I ended up growing up and dating women that look just like her. I'm lucky.

Upset at the title. They were grey like a Borg cube and very sexy, showing off her body. That was the only purpose of the design, was it not? I will now watch the video.

Starfleet fully accepts the . ... . as long as they're sexy.

They made perfect sense.
The reason she isn't in a tight body suit in Picard is because she isn't young and hot anymore and that series is fan-fiction garbage.
