Ukraine War - Russian submarine conducts nuclear launch drills at North Pole

On 29 October Russia’s strategic nuclear-powered submarine “Yury Dolgoruky” of 955 project (Borey class) test-launched a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile at the Kura test site on Kamchatka from the waters of the Barents Sea. This was the first time a Borey submarine had a full set of 16 missiles on board when the launch of Bulava was conducted.
“The launch was conducted from submerged position. Missile trajectory parameters of the Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile were normal. As per the confirmed control data combat parts of the missile reached the Kura test site on Kamchatka,” reported the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the Ministry the launch was special not only due to the full set of missiles on board but also due to the fact that “Bulava was launched in line with the program of combat training after strategic nuclear-powered submarine “Yury Dolgoruky” became part of the submarine forces of Severny fleet.”
All previous launches of Bulava were part of development testing of the new weapon.
“Yury Dolgoruky”, lead vessel of 955 Borey project was taken in service to the Russian Navy in the beginning of 2013. Each submarine of the class can carry 16 Bulava missiles, with each one able to carry ten nuclear warheads. Ballistic missile range depends on equipage and can reach 11 thousand km.
It is expected that Borey class submarines equipped with Bulava missile will constitute the basis for Russian Naval strategic nuclear forces by 2025-2030.
