'The Centaur', Chapter 16, by Algernon Blackwood
Показать описание
"Every fragment of visible Nature might, as far as is known, serve as part in some organism unlike our bodies…. As to that which can, and that which cannot, play the part of an organism, we know very little. A sameness greater or less with our own bodies is the basis from which we conclude to other bodies and souls…. A certain likeness of outward form, and again some amount of similarity in action, are what we stand on when we argue to psychical life. But our failure, on the other side, to discover these symptoms is no sufficient warrant for positive denial. It is natural in this connection to refer to Fechner's vigorous advocacy."

ether, or the luminiferous aether, was a postulated medium for the propagation of light. The idea was popularized in the 18th century, and although there was already some experimentation as early as 1887 that suggested ether did not actually exist, it continued to be a popular idea all the way into the 1920s.
Bayswater: an area in London located between Kensington Gardens to the south, Paddington to the north-east, and Notting Hill to the west.
Sloan Street: the northern end of this road T's into Knightsbridge (A315), while the south end terminates at Sloane Square, at Holy Trinity Church. That's about 6/10 of a mile, a kilometer. Which end of the road are they at? Not enough hints yet to be sure.
brougham: Given the time period we are in, this is probably a horse-drawn carriage with a roof, four wheels, and an enclosed body with two doors that sat two people, while the driver sat forwards of the enclosed area, being fully exposed. An automobile version of this also existed with a similar arrangement, but I can't pin down the exact date such automobiles started to be made. Automobiles were being hand made as early as the late 19th century, and Ford's Model T comes along in 1908, so it is possible to be the automobile version, but cars will still fairly rare in 1911. But I guess if you were to find them in non-trivial numbers anywhere in 1911, London would be such a place!
