Winthrop Cultural Council’s CINEMA TREASURES: Kincade’s Theater Movie Posters at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center.
A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY
🍿 🎞️ 🎥
Yesterday I visited the E.B. Newton Cultural Center’s Clock Tower Gallery to see Winthrop Cultural Council’s cool cinematic exhibit: CINEMA TREASURES: KINCADE THEATER MOVIE POSTERS. Bill & Dorothy Kincade, of Kincade’s Theater fame, left a rich legacy in assorted movie posters that brought a flood, a tsunami really, of memories to this Winthrop kid, among others lucky enough to see this rich treasure trove of Winthrop movie memories!
Joanne Hillman, Chair of Winthrop Cultural Council, along with Darlene Ferrara, niece of Bill & Dorothy, couldn’t have been more gracious in allowing me to photograph some of this wondrous booty! These are just a few of the thousands of movies that ran on our hometown screen through the years of course. Some titles you’ll recognize — maybe prompting the intoxicating smell of popcorn, the comforting taste of Sno-Caps, Junior Mints or Milk Duds — and others, well, maybe not so much. But they all add up to some rich, rich cultural archeology of our very own palace of dreams on Putnam street!
For my part, my Dad took me there to see Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book at six and I was never quite the same! We bought the record and I danced around the living room singing The Bare Necessities day and night for six months straight! I could likewise list, as you could, countless movies that stopped us in our tracks; sitting in the dark, shoulder to shoulder, as that iconic neon blue clock kept time while we lost ourselves in distant galaxies, obscure dimensions or even just, well, innocently at the beach…
🏊♀️
…duunnn dunnn... duuuunnnn duun... duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn dunnnn!!!
You get the picture, I take it!
Anyway, since this is about all of us, I’d love to know what movies rocked your world, scared the hell out of you, changed your life, or just made you smile for days on end…
Here’s looking at you, kid! ☀️😎
“Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities, old mother nature's recipes
That bring the bare necessities of life”
~From The Jungle Book, 1967
