Why is the Minecraft Movie Live-Action?

A Minecraft Movie brings Minecraft into the real world, but fans aren't happy with the trailer. Why is it live-action and not animation? Why is Jack Black Steve? During the new Minecraft Live presentation, the creative team answers questions and goes behind the scenes of A Minecraft Movie to explain some of the biggest pieces of criticism.

"Different" or "never been done before" doesn't mean better. You choose the medium that better conveys the atmosphere of a story. Live action was not the route for that.

You wanna know why animation was chosen for fan creators? Because live action is just ugly and doesn't suit the game.
Animation gets the job done, and you just spent millions of dollars creating something a lot of people didn't want.

While I do appreciate the director explaining why the movie is done with live action, I still think it would be better if it was all done with CGI.

The whole point of why I like Minecraft is that it’s like a liminal space for reflection and creativity, I hope the movie doesn’t forget that…

Kids deserve better than this. Kids also probably don’t like the trailer. So there goes the argument that it’s meant for kids. Also Minecraft isn’t supposed to be just for kids it’s meant for everyone. This movie gonna flop.

I just wish it was a movie where the world of Minecraft was seen as common and not an abnormality. I'm kind of tired of "woah, we're in this world now?", "woah, I can do this now?", and "wait, you're not from our world?" tropes in movies. I wish we had a movie that leaned into the absurdity of Minecraft and played it completely straight, more like the LEGO movie did. Have a movie where Creepers are an everyday tragedy, building dirt houses to survive is a common coming of age moment, capes are a status symbol, standing in place and crouching repeatedly is a common greeting, etc. Minecraft Story Mode did a lot of this pretty well, with how it'd take elements of the game and its community and fit them into the story; I think that'd be better for a film like this.

I don’t get it. If this movie was supposed to be for kids, and most of Hollywood thinks animation is strictly a kid’s medium anyway, they have no real excuse to do this in live action 😣

Kids don’t deserve whatever leftover mindless slop creators don’t care about to get easy money, they should have substance and effort too. When I watched that in the Wild Robot, there was a lot of kids in the theatre but they were quiet, they were actually invested
