In the UK, if you pass your test in a automatic, you are not allowed to drive a manual but if you pass it in a manual, you can drive both.

The main difference between the UK and the US test is that if you nearly kill the examiner in the UK, you fail.

I've seen a number of Americans misunderstand the same thing here. Your 'Instructor' is a professional who has been teaching you to drive - this is who you practise with for an hour before the test. The test is carried out by an 'Examiner' who you meet for the first time literally at the start of the test.
If your anecdotes about your own test are accurate- there's no way you'd have passed your test in the UK, I'm afraid.
In the UK you can be taught by your parents or other qualified adult- but it pays dividends to have at least some lessons from a professional who knows the realities of what is required in the test.

So I'm a English driving instructor, I spend roughly 40 hours with a customer before taking them for their driving test, on test day, I pick them up from their house and take them for a drive/ to do manoeuvres, always staying close to the test centre, about 10 minutes before the test we get to the test centre and park up, we sit in the waiting room, they go out and do the test with a examiner, only around 50% of the people who take a driving test actually pass (government statistics)

Oh and learning to drive isn't something you can sign up for in school, you have to find a instructor privately and pay us individually for lessons, on adverage it costs around £1600

The driving instructor is who you take your lessons with and the driving examiner is who you have the test with. It's not the same person.

I suspect that if you had committed the intersection error on a UK test, the examiner would have failed you, stopped the test and quite possibly made you pull over to the side of the road and got out of the car (you would have to wait for your driving instructor/parent to come before you could drive.

We don't have classes either. The UK test was so much harder in the UK than California one. No roundabouts, no reversing around a corner, no parallel parking. All driving in straight lines to 4 way stops, no bendy narrow country roads with hedges over the eyeline. Observations needed to be far less frequent, and I could have done it in an automatic if I couldn't drive manual.

There is no way a uk examiner would have passed you 😂

If there are 10 people taking the theory test in the UK, non of them will be getting the same test. It's generated by computer and done with a key board now.

With an Automatic driving license you can ONLY drive Automatic vehicles. BUT, with a FULL license, i.e. manual gears, you CAN drive an automatic.

There is no way you would have passed having made such a potentially fatal, major error on your test in the UK, or just about anywhere in Europe, JT. My eldest took his driving test whilst we lived in VA. It was over in under 15 minutes. He didn't even have to make any difficult maneuveres.

if you pass your test in the UK using an automatic car you cannot then drive a manual, if you pass using a manual then you can drive both

Most people in the UK have an instructor to learn how to drive because the test is so specific, than even a good regular driver doesn't drive like that, so parents etc can't really teach you to test level in most cases. We then practice with family members between lessons. The lessons are expensive so learning to drive is an expensive process!

We have to parallel park a lot more in many areas of the UK than in the USA because we have less parking lots, and narrower, older roads.

They used to slap their board on the dash as the signal for the emergency stop

I passed a week after my 17th birthday but these days the tests are so much more intense. We didn’t have to do a theory test first we were asked questions as we drove. If you have a U.K. licence from the U.K. you can use it to hire a car in pretty much every country due to the test being so comprehensive. I taught my children to drive and my son used his own car to pass his test. Wearing respectable clothes, a car that is well looked after and relax.

I passed my motorcycle test first time after taking some voluntary tuition (but it was a lot easier in those days, as the examiner didn’t follow you round - you rode round the block and he ran back and forth through alleyways watching you as much as he could, then stepped off the kerb in front of you to test your emergency stop).

Five and a half years later (39 years ago this month) I passed my car driving test first time after only six weeks of formal tuition (again, it was a lot easier, as there were no separate hazard perception or theory tests).

OH, JT I am 5 and half mins in she said "Instructor" not "Examiner". The instructor is the person who gives you lessons, the examiner is the person who tests you.

Was a proud mum when my son passed his driving test first time with no faults at all. Also very relieved not to have anymore driving lessons to pay for! Was agreed we would pay as we moved family to countryside with no public transport

In the UK you need to be able to DRIVE, not just start & steer a car, because British roads 7 traffic conditions require skill & concentration.

I found that the UK mostly encourages people to have instructors (I think they were thinking about removing parent thought entirely at one point). All of my instructors (lived in different places while learning) were thrilled to find out that my mum doesn't drive at all, so I hadn't picked up any bad habits that I would have to unlearn (as not all people who can drive actually drive correctly). Even persons taught by parents will usually have a few professional lessons prior to the test to ensure they are good enough to pass. So yes, the majority of UK learners are with an instructor and thus have an instructor to collect them, do last-minute revision, and drive you to the test centre where you will meet the examiner (tests are safer in instructor cars as the examiner then has their own break pedel to stop you pulling out illegally in front of a truck).
