One of the most important aspects of any gaming experience is ensuring smooth and responsive gameplay. However, many PS5 owners have reported noticing input lag or delay between performing actions on their controller and seeing the results on screen. This can negatively impact everything from precise aim and timing in first-person shooters to quick reactions in fighting games. If you’ve been struggling with input lag on your PS5, don’t worry – there are some simple steps you can take to potentially reduce lag and get your gameplay feeling much more instant and tight. In this blog post, we will explore a few of the most effective methods for lowering input delay on the PlayStation 5 console.

Common Causes of Input Lag on PS5
There are a few main technical factors that can contribute to input lag on PS5:

Display/Monitor Response Time – The time it takes a pixel to change colors adds lag. LCD TVs average 8-12ms while high-end gaming monitors have 1ms or less.
Processing Delays – Time for the console and display to process graphics commands adds lag. 4K resolutions or upgraded graphics like 120Hz come with a processing cost.
Video Processing Features – Features like motion smoothing, aspect ratio adjustments, or zoom modes require extra processing that adds milliseconds of lag.
Display Tuning – Default settings may prioritize picture quality over performance. Things like gaming modes help optimize for latency.
HDMI Cables – Lower quality or longer HDMI cables can cause interference that adds a fraction of lag.
The following sections will outline specific optimization steps that can help mitigate these technical causes of input lag when gaming on PS5.

With a full chain optimized from console to screen, input lags below 20ms become achievable even on mid-range setups.

Use a Low Latency Display

Use a Low Latency Display
While many TVs can achieve respectable latencies with optimization, dedicated gaming monitors designed for responsiveness are ideal. Here are some benefits:

Screens average 5ms response and 1ms minimum worst case which no TV can match
Higher refresh 120-240Hz further lowers lag vs 60Hz screens
16:9 aspect ratios avoid letter/pillarboxing processing
Sizes typically 24-27″ which lets you sit closer for a more engaged experience

Conclusion on Reduce Input Lag Ps5
By checking your display’s input lag reduction settings, optimizing your PS5‘s video output configuration, utilizing a low-latency gaming monitor if possible, and applying additional minor tweaks, you can significantly reduce the input lag when playing games on PS5. This results in a faster, tighter, and more precise gaming experience especially important for competitive and reflex-based games. With some simple adjustments following the guide, input lags below 30ms and even lower are achievable on most current-gen PS5 setups.
If you are experiencing the PS5 controller lag issue in 2024, trust me, you are not alone.
For some users, this issue started just suddenly out of nowhere. For others, it started after an update, or after re-installing a game. Also, some users experienced it on both PS4 and PS5 games while others did with only one particular type on their PlayStation 5 console
In addition, there are two additional things you can do when using the cable connection that I believe will make it fix the input lag issue on your PS5 console (in fact, I do think it may be the reason for the varying experiences among PS5 users).
Now, before I tell you what these two extra tips are, let me first show you how to switch your DualSense controller to USB cable connection on your PlayStation 5.
Connect the larger USB-A to the USB port on the console, and the USB-C to the controller
Go to Settings - Devices - Controllers - Communication Methods, switch to ‘Use USB Cable’

Very helpful, indeed! I'll add something regarding the TV settings: I tried to switch my PS5 to ALLM, but it said my TV doesn't support ALLM. Looked up my TV specifications and it should. Turned out I need to a) use one specific HDMI port that supports ALLM, and b) switch the settings of that port from the pre-set Dolby Vision to Optimized in the TV settings, as the PS5 doesn't support Dolby Vision and at the same time the Dolby Vision setting blocks the ALLM function. Make sure to explore your TV specifications and settings when attempting this, folks! It's too much to put in a video as I'm sure the variations are endless. Knowing that ALLM exists at all and how to set it up on the PS5 was super helpful. If and how it works with your TV deserves to be explored, as any game that requires quick actions (looking at you, Returnal) otherwise becomes unplayable. I even struggled with Cocoon, of all games, thanks to the lag on my new TV. That's over now. Gamers be gamin'!

My TV doesn't support ATLLM, but the communication via usb method I can sense an IMMEDIATE difference. Thank you so much, dude. Elden Ring should be so much more tolerable now.

This is false the duelsense does not have less input lag on your controller (the ALLM thing is true) but the duelsense is literally designed to be wireless it does not have less latency when wired that is a myth it has the same latency wired or Bluetooth this has been tested several times and fun fact the ps4 controller actually has significantly more input lag when you use a wired connection

If I choose to use usb cable then to play wirelessly I need to change the use cable setting to use bluethoth? Second, when using cable dualsense will stop charging?

can confirm with cable and disabled BT reduce input lag (reasons: polling rate on USB is much higher (HW specs: BT ~400, USB ~ 1000) ; other BT & WLAN can have negative impact ; PS5 has not to handle BT connections & commands additionally). Another tipp > if not needed cuz u r playing competetive, disable controller effects, do not plug ur headset to your controller (causing lag 2).

my input lag, while using Elgato screen capture, was having buffering enabled. once I disabled it, I was good.

you reset the system controller configuration when you switched to usb.

your lag most likely came from custom settings
