Great song. I bought the album in 1974. Listen to the lyrics. He's saying don't worship so called religious men of the past, present, or future. They never were meant to be worshiped and they never should be worshiped. Move on with your life to more important aspirations. I'm an atheist so I can relate to this non-preying, non-religious lifestyle.

Great song.  Terrible mix.  Chris Slade's drums are buried.

Manfred Mann has a way of injecting great solos into lame songs, like this one, but it felt more like they ripped of Led Zeppelin around 3:50 with Dazed and Confused to make the good solo .

Bocimir: ~ Thank you for posting this wonderfully "High Quality" up-load of the studio-version of Manfred Mann's "Buddha". I searched for this song a couple of years ago (in 2013 -, 40 years after its release), and all that I could find at-that-time was a poor-quality "live version" of it. ~ I remember that during the Summer of 1973, an "underground" radio-station in my locale of Birmingham, Alabama would often play this song; and I hadn't heard the "studio version" of it since that era. Also, I remember seeing Manfred Mann's Earth Band performing at a concert in downtown Birmingham in June of that year. They were the "opening act" for a multi-act show that also featured The New Cactus Band, The Wet Willie Band, Blue Oyster Cult, and headliner Savoy Brown. When I hear this song -,  I can still picture the guitarist with a black "Les Paul Custom", the bass-guitarist with a Rickenbacker"[model] 4003 Bass", and Manfred himself playing his Hammond organ and Mini-Moog synthesizer. Hell ! ... I can just-about still smell the marijuana smoke !

great rock song!! The lyrics??!! For me it's alright but if we are judging songs just for the lyrics more than half of them we wouldn't listen.

A shimmeringly brilliant song which suddenly clicked with me in the summer of 1979

Saw Buddah walking down the street
I said, "Hey man, I never thought we'd meet"
Looked at me and he did a dance
He said, "Hey son, you gotta take your chance"

Saw Jesus in '65
Said, "Hey son, you're still alive"
He was standing in a riot zone
Said, "Hey man, why don't you go home?"
He said, "I never was, never will be
What you gotta do is carry on and forget about me"

Saw Moses in a Cadillac
Said, "Hey man, why did you come back?"
He looked at me and he did a dance
Said, "Hey man, you gotta take your chance"

Saw the saviour standing on the stage
He looked at me, I was in a rage
Looked my way and he said to me
"You gotta carry on and forget about me
'Cause I never was, never will be
What you gotta do is carry on and forget about me"

Classic song on "Get Your Rocks Off" album. Guess they had to change the name to "Messin'." Dug the cover of the original.
