With the working release of Quake Champions' HRTF, I can finally start Quake week. Let's kick things off with the original and by far best Quake game. Through the wonders of source ports, it's possible to play Quake 1 with full binaural audio. FTE was intended to be a multiplayer client, but it's still possible to play single-player with no problems other than uncapped bunnyhopping speed. Quake 1 sounds truly amazing with a full 3D soundscape even considering the low bitrate sounds, though the accuracy of the HRTF is slightly imprecise when it comes to judging distance. The developers also added reverb EFX to when you go underwater, which was a really nice touch. Too bad it's not possible to add full reverb into the maps themselves.

In addition to FTE, I'm also playing Quake 1 with a custom soundpack that uses the higher-quality QTest1 .WAV files. It only changes a couple dozen weapon and pickup sounds, but it makes a world of difference with the Super Shotgun and explosion samples.
