Even though the footage of me playing and Becky dancing were filmed on different days and locations... with no prior wardrobe knowledge - Becky had the same make of shirt on ... how weird is that?
I wrote this song in 2016 when in hospital. The struggle with loneliness was unbearable at times. A very close friend told me some hard truths filled with love and compassion including, "if you feel lonely, there's a good chance you don't like the person you're alone with."
At the time this hit hard (and hurt!!), but I knew it was the truth. I kept telling myself I was lonely, so I became convinced I truly was. I couldn't find any love for myself despite knowing how much God loves me and had done in my life. I was so wrapped in trying to run away from my brokenness that I couldn't see all the gracious blessings in my life. It was like sailing the stormy sea in the dark with no control and ravaged by fear.
I was encouraged to lean into my brokenness and endeavour to be more emotionally transparent; something quite counter cultural for men here in Scotland. Learning that I could be honest about how I felt physically, mentally and spiritually with the people I trust was a revelation! I'd spent so many years trying to either run away or put on the mask of a brave face. I grew up in a culture where vulnerability was seen as a weakness. However...
The truth REALLY does set you free!! I let go of the rope! Instead of running from the pain I leaned into it, prayed into it, and developed a compassionate relationship to it. Jesus doesn't run from my pain; He loves that I can share it with him.
This was the game changer; realising I wasn't made to carry this burden on my own lifted such a load. God faithfully led me out of the darkness and into a new dawn filled with love, grace and mercy. Honesty led to the miracle of healing. I learned so much from the pain of my brokenness because I leaned into it with God. It took time, acceptance, honesty, humility and faith, but we got there.
I know there will be storms in the night, but I also know the dawn will ascend. All Glory to God.
