While I really dislike Telegram's advertising that it's fully "E2EE" and doesn't clarify that it's just for "secret chat" which only works between 2 people, I still see this as a huge attack on privacy and encryption.
Next time this happens, it's Signal.

I used to work for an isp and sometimes the police called us and asked for data on certain activities. We had orders to always comply with the requests.

And no, i dont live in a country oppressed by a regime.

"A great example of a politician saying something without saying anything at all" : this perectly sums up how Macron communicates (I'm a french citizen btw). He's quite "famous" here for saying one thing and the exact opposite of that thing in the same sentence, which drives most of us crazy, and leaves us helpless. As for this attack on privacy, yes, I agree with you, it's alarming, and scary, but not surprising from this county. France is a shadow of a democracy for some years now. I'm not surprised by what Macron did, and the absurdity of his argument.

This is matter of philosophy, but what makes Telegram a good product is that although Telegram isn’t private by default, the privacy for one-to-one communication is available when you need it. Functionality and feature wise it’s one of the best communication apps for personal and business use. So you’re able to get secure communication when necessary and still utilize the other social and messaging features which are incredibly robust.

Telegram is not private. It is like reddit. They have to moderate the group chats because they are public and they refuse to do that.

The analogy with the safe is not complete. The real problem is that Pavel refuses to help the authorities with their investigations. It's more like a safe manufacturer refusing to help police with lock picks or at least something useful.
Pavel has been known for his libertarian rhetoric for a long time, but to deny how the relationships in real society between society and institutions works is at least naive.

Regulation of encryption actually isn't new. In the USA, strong encryption was considered a military munition and its use and export was regulated until 1996. So despite the idea of France requiring certification for the use of encryption being VERY outdated, it's not that shocking to me that they're trying to control it given fairly recent events illustrating a power struggle between the government and its citizens (mass protests, etc.). This is all from an outsider's perspective of course, as I've never been nor plan to go to France, don't know about their laws, current events, government, history, culture, etc. But what I do know is that if your online service is offered in a different country, it has to abide by their laws, even if it isn't based there. Not saying I agree with what they're doing, but some things to consider.
