Maintaining a healthy lawn in the fall is essential to ensure a lush, green yard in the spring. In this video, we cover five easy steps for fall lawn care that will help your grass thrive even through the cooler months. Follow these steps to promote strong roots, improve soil health, and repair any dead patches before winter hits. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these tips will make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood.

Step 1: Verify Soil Water Levels

The first step in fall lawn care is checking your soil’s moisture levels. To grow healthy grass, your soil needs 6 to 8 inches of water saturation. You can easily check this with a soil probe or even a screwdriver—insert it into the ground to see how far the moisture has penetrated. If the soil is dry beyond the top layer, it’s time to water your lawn deeply. Proper watering helps keep your lawn resilient as the temperatures drop.

Step 2: Dethatch Your Lawn

Thatch is a layer of dead grass and other debris that builds up on the soil surface, preventing water, nutrients, and air from reaching the roots. Use a lawn dethatcher to remove this debris. Dethatching allows your grass to breathe and absorb water more efficiently. It also helps prevent diseases and pests that thrive in thick thatch layers. Regular dethatching in the fall ensures your lawn stays healthy and strong.

Step 3: Scarify for Better Growth

Scarifying your lawn is the next step. A lawn scarifier is a powerful machine that digs into the lawn’s thatch and root mass, thinning it out to promote lateral growth. Scarifying opens up the soil, helping water and nutrients penetrate deeper, encouraging grass to spread and cover bare patches. This is particularly important in the fall, as it prepares your lawn to establish a healthy root system before winter.

Step 4: Fertilize with a Wetting Agent

Fertilizing is crucial for nourishing your lawn, but using a wetting agent can make it even more effective. A wetting agent helps break up compacted soil, allowing more water and oxygen to reach the roots. For fall lawn care, I recommend using a fertilizer rich in nitrogen and potassium. Nitrogen promotes strong leaf growth, while potassium enhances root development, making your lawn hardier against cold weather. Fertilizing now gives your grass the nutrients it needs to survive the winter and bounce back in the spring.

Step 5: Patch and Repair Dead Areas

Finally, patch and repair any dead or thin areas of your lawn. Whether you use a seed patch kit or lay down fresh sod, it’s essential to fill in these spots before winter arrives. This will prevent weeds from taking over and ensure a uniform lawn next year. Fall is the ideal time to reseed because the cooler temperatures and moist soil create the perfect environment for grass seed to germinate and establish strong roots.

Conclusion

By following these five easy steps—verifying soil moisture, dethatching, scarifying, fertilizing, and patching dead areas—you’ll set your lawn up for success in the fall and beyond. Regular fall lawn care not only enhances your yard’s appearance but also strengthens your grass for the colder months ahead. One thing I didn't hear about was the timing of the process. What temperatures you should be looking at long-term forecasting before you do this project?

My neighbor came over and said he wanted to redo his lawn, but his ground was hard as a rock. He does have a sprinkler system but did not run it thinking of redoing his lawn because the 3-year lawn was planted by the builder. So, I told him to spray some baby shampoo down now because rain was coming it should soften it up. So, the next morning after a down poor. All of sudden he called me a said look at my lawn, there were bubbles everywhere. He put so much shampoo on the dry lawn and when it rain it causes bubbles in his lawn. I just laughed and said just let it go because it going to rain the next couple days and will wash it away.

Great video. I live in central Indiana and have already overseed with JG's Black Beauty Ultra seed. I think it is too late now to dethatch or scarify. I will definitely do that next year. Questions: In the early spring next year, I plan to pre-emergent fairly early. What is the earliest I can start to dethatch? Can I go ahead and overseed in the spring after dethatching? If so, how long should I wait until after I do my early spring preemergent? Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

How about a video on how to repel mice from a mobile home. You're not going to make the skirting on a mobile home impenetrable What can I do to prevent mice from destroying the insulation on the ductwork that connects the two halves of our double-wide together. I just replaced the flexible duct which was destroyed by rodents to a rigid duct with insulation..I'm subscribing on the outside chance that it mill make it more likely that I will notice any response you make.

Taking a risk here in NY, just throwing down seed for a renovation. See if I can toss some kelp at it to get those roots secured before frost.

Do you recommend cutting the grass very low before using the dethatcher? Also, it's been awhile since you last had a video on it a year or two back, but are you just exclusively using the scarifier now or do you use the dethatching rakes and then the scarfire?

Jared, I live in Sandy UT and for the past two years I've seen a lot of fescue pop up in my KBG lawn where it never existed before. I did overseed 4 years ago with Turf Blue Pro. Are you aware of others in our state having similar issues this year and any tips to deal with it?

I noticed yellowing around your tree, can anything be done about this or just need to accept the grass will struggle?
