If a country the size of India decides to make chess a priority and to become an international powerhouse it does not take long. It helps that the game has historic roots in India. But for the factors to align as they have suggests that chess's time has come once again. Chess requires very little capital to get started. It relies on initiative and talent of its participants, so it is good focal point for countries with large populations. But I think it requires the tacit approval of a nation's leadership and that is not something we in the West have at the moment.
