We all know what a bulletproof vest is all about. It basically protects its user from flying bullets. But NASA scientists are now testing the decompression properties of various textile fabrics used in spacesuits. The idea is simple—NASA wants to know how various types of fabrics would respond to the impacts made by micrometeorites. In order to achieve this, research scientists working at NASA’s Ballistics Impact Lab are using a 40-foot-long gun to simulate the impact of micrometeorites. It is a known fact that a rapid decompression occurring because of a micrometeorite strike anywhere on the surface of a spacesuit can prove fatal to astronauts. This study is therefore extremely significant, because NASA can redesign the material used for making spacesuits accordingly. The ballistic gun used for this study shoots a steel ball at a velocity of 3000 feet per second. Would you like to buy a spacesuit sometime in the near future? A spacesuit that protects you from small meteorites? Do let us know.
