This is true! Im a transgender goth and I deal with some gatekeepers or just random people saying "You dont look goth so you cant be goth." Or when someone mistakes me for emo and calls me a depressed emo who probably has fresh scars.

While Tx2 is right, I feel we need to acknowledge and isolate the types of persons that are the reasons for the infighting and drama.
One group is the E boys/gurls who only jump into emoness for a trend, go to concerts to hear one or two iconic songs and leave. they only like the most well known of songs; have weird outlandish tastes; do not know pain, suffering, strife nor loneliness.

Then the next group are people who use to bully and ostracise others for being emo/alternative, and now 10-20+ years later - because they or their kids are going through a "phase" and its "cool and trendy" to be emo/alt now they want to jump in and act like they were _always_ there. They will also neither acknowledge the pain they've inflicted upon others nor apologize for it.

Then there's the group who are a bunch of prudish fuddy duddy gatekeepers. They'll say Tx2, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, TFK, TDG and the like; as well as persons Johnnie Guilbert, Jake Webber, Colby Brock, Cole Sprouse, Danisnotonfire are "not emo, I don't know what you want to call yourselves, but you need to find a new word to identify by as they/that/this is not emo" .
