Except we were on a gold standard then and we no longer are. In addition to that we decided that money was free to print and give to everyone, being the reason why 80% of money introduced into circulation happened in like the last 3-4 years.

The problem is America has many other debts that eat up all of the tax revenue. That is why they have to continue to issue treasuries. They can handle interest payments on debt and other debt by printing money. Not a good practice!
